1. An indwelling medical device which controls, which indicates, or which both controls and indicates a bacterial infection which causes a change in the pH of the environment of said indwelling medical device, wherein said indwelling medical device comprises a pH-sensitive polymer matrix coating in which a biologically active agent is trapped and integrally incorporated, said agent being released from said polymer matrix coating at an increased rate or only upon said change of pH, wherein said change in pH causes said pH-sensitive polymer matrix to swell to release said biologically active agent trapped within said pH-sensitive polymer matrix.
