Steerable electrode catheter
First Claim
1. A deflectable tip steerable catheter comprising:
- a control handle having a longitudinal axis therethrough and a proximal end and a distal end;
a slideblock axially movably supported in the control handle;
the slideblock having a distal part and a separate proximal part not fixedly connected to the slideblock distal part, an opening being defined in the distal part;
a catheter shaft having a proximal end attached to the control handle distal end and having at least one passageway therethrough from the shaft proximal end to a shaft distal end;
a deflectable tip portion having a proximal end attached to the shaft distal end, the tip portion also having a distal end and a longitudinal axis therethrough; and
a pullwire attached to the deflectable tip portion near its distal end to a point spaced radially outwardly from the tip portion longitudinal axis, the pullwire extending proximally through the tip portion, through the catheter shaft portion passageway, into the control handle through its distal end, through the opening in the distal part of the slideblock, and being secured to the proximal part of the slideblock, whereby proximal displacement of the distal part of the slideblock within the control handle causes corresponding proximal travel of the proximal part of the slideblock and the pullwire within the control handle, but distal displacement of the distal part of the slideblock within the control handle causes no distal movement of the separate proximal part of the slideblock within the control handle.

Abstract
A steerable catheter includes control handle having a generally tubular housing with a longitudinal slot therein in which an axially or longitudinally movable two-part slideblock resides, and a generally cylindrical, rotatably mounted thumbwheel surrounding a distal portion of the tubular housing, for controlling the axial translation of the slideblock. The pullwire passes into the distal end of the control handle and is only secured to the proximal part of the two-part slideblock so as to prevent the user from placing the pullwire under compression. A tip radius adjusting wire is attached to and extends distally from a slide actuator in the control handle into and through the main catheter shaft portion. The free distal end of the tip radius adjusting wire is selectably Iocatable at different positions. The radius of curvature of the tip portion, when deflected, depends upon how far distally into the deflectable tip portion the radius adjusting wire has been advanced by the user. The electrode catheter thus has a deflectable tip whose radius of curvature is adjustable over a relatively wide range.

5. A deflectable tip steerable catheter comprising:
-
a control handle having a longitudinal axis therethrough and a proximal end and a distal end; a slideblock axially movably supported in the control handle, the slideblock having a distal part and a separate proximal part not fixedly connected to the slideblock distal part, the distal part having an external helical thread; a catheter shaft having a proximal end attached to the control handle distal end and having at least one passageway therethrough from the shaft proximal end to a shaft distal end; a deflectable tip portion having a proximal end attached to the shaft distal end, the tip portion also having a distal end and a longitudinal axis therethrough; and a pullwire attached off-axis to the deflectable tip portion near its distal end, the pullwire extending proximally through the tip portion, through the catheter shaft portion passageway, into the control handle through its distal end, through an opening in the distal part of the slideblock, and being secured to the proximal part of the slideblock; and an axially rotatably mounted thumbwheel surrounding the distal part of the slideblock, the thumbwheel having an internal helical thread in engagement with the external helical thread on the distal part of the slideblock; whereby deflection of the tip portion is caused by proximal displacement of the distal part of the slideblock within the control handle, which is, in turn, caused solely by axial rotation of the thumbwheel. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8)
