1. An apparatus for suppressing a fire, said apparatus comprising:

  • a gas generator containing a propellant that is a mixture of a fuel, strontium nitrate as an oxidizer, and magnesium carbonate, wherein the magnesium carbonate content of said propellant is at least 35% by weight that is sufficient to inhibit the generation of effluent by-products that are corrosive to aluminum; and

    a passageway between said gas generator and said fire.
