1. A suture anchor device, comprising:
- an elongated anchor member having a distal end and a proximal end;
a shaft extending proximally from the proximal end of the anchor member, said shaft having a distal end and a proximal end;
a plurality of wing members extending proximally and radially outward from the proximal end of the anchor member, said members having a distal fixed end and a proximal free end and opposed longitudinally extending sides;
cutting means along at least one side of at least one wing member; and
,suture retaining means in said shaft; and
wherein the distal end of the anchor member terminates in a blunted nose.

Abstract
A suture anchor having an anchor member, a central shaft and outwardly extending wing members. A suture mounting hole is provided in the suture anchor for receiving a surgical suture. The suture anchor is inserted into a bore hole in a bone as part of an orthopedic surgical procedure wherein soft tissue such as a tendon is attached to the surface of the bone. Optionally, bone tissue may be attached to the surface of the bone. The wings may have cutting edges or piercing points. The suture anchors may have screw threads on their outer surfaces.

17. A method of implanting a suture anchor device in a bone, comprising:
-
I) inserting a suture anchor device in a bore hole drilled in a bone, wherein the suture anchor device comprises; an elongated anchor member having a distal end and a proximal end; a shaft extending proximally from the proximal end of the anchor member, said shaft having a distal end and a proximal end; a plurality of wing members extending proximally and radially outward from the proximal end of the anchor member, said members having a distal fixed end and a proximal free end and opposed longitudinally extending sides; cutting means along at least one side of at least one wing member; and
,suture retaining means in said shaft; and II) rotating the suture anchor device sufficiently to effectively anchor the suture anchor device in the bore hole by enlarging the diameter of at least part of the bore hole below the surface of the bone through the cutting action of the cutting means as the suture anchor device is rotated.
