1. A method of treating particulate waste matter by electrical discharge comprising the steps of:
- positioning a plurality of electrode structures to define an inter-electrode plasmalysis zone;
establishing an atmosphere free of ambient reactants within said plasmalysis zone;
introducing the particulate matter to be treated into the plasmalysis zone; and
producing a plurality of discrete electrical discharges within said plasmalysis zone, said discrete electrical discharges being produced independently of each other in a desired sequence between said electrode structures.

Abstract
A method for the treatment of waste matter by plasma action. A plurality of electrode structures are positioned to define a reaction zone associated with the inter-electrode space. The inter-electrode space is conditioned (as by preionizing) and a series of discrete electrical discharges are produced throughout the reaction zone. In a preferred embodiment, the reaction zone is subjected to a sequence of discrete electrical discharges in a time interval less than the residence time of material to be treated within the reaction zone such that the waste material is pyrolyzed during its transit through the reaction zone.

4. A method of treating particulate waste matter by electrical discharge within a conditioned treatment zone which comprises:
-
establishing an atmosphere free of ambient reactants within the treatment zone; passing particulate waste matter to be treated through the treatment zone; and subjecting the whole of the treatment zone to a selected sequence of discrete electrical discharges between individually controlled electrodes in a time interval less than the transit time of particulate matter through the treatment zone whereby the particulate matter within the treatment zone is plasmalyzed. - View Dependent Claims (5, 6)

7. A method of plasmalyzing particulate matter by electrical discharge comprising the steps of:
-
positioning a plurality of electrode structures to define a desired inter-electrode plasmalysis zone; conditioning the plasmalysis zone, including establishing an atmosphere free of ambient reactants within the plasmalysis zone; passing particulate matter to be treated through the plasmalysis zone; and subjecting substantially the entire plasmalysis zone to discrete electrical discharges within a time interval considerably less than the expected residence time of a particle to be plasmalyzed within the plasmalysis zone, said discrete electrical discharges being produced independently of each other in a desired sequence between said electrode structures. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9)
