Abstract

A water sculpture is provided having a contoured surface with a horizontal portion and a downstream inclined portion adjoining the horizontal portion. Water is propelled onto the contoured surface and flows upwards onto the incline portion thereof so as to create various aesthetic effects as the water rolls off the incline portion of the surface or curls back upon itself.

Claims

1. A water sculpture comprising:

a contoured surface sized and configured to support a flow of water thereon and having a substantially horizontal upstream portion, a downstream inclined portion adjoining said horizontal portion, said contoured surface being substantially unbounded by lateral side walls such that water on said contoured surface is allowed to ventilate laterally; and

a nozzle for providing said flow of water onto said contoured surface, wherein said flow of water initially flows over said horizontal portion and then flows up said inclined portion, wherein various aesthetic effects can be achieved as the water rolls off the inclined portion of said contoured surface or curls back upon itself.

17. The water sculpture of claim 1, wherein said sheet flow of water has a relatively uniform thickness which conforms substantially to the contours of said contoured surface so as to form a free-standing flow shape upon said contoured surface.

18. The water sculpture of claim 1, wherein said contoured surface has a concave-up semi-cylindrical curvature thereon.

19. The water sculpture of claim 1, wherein the flow parameters of said nozzle are varied over time so as to create a variety of time-varying water flow effects.

20. The water sculpture of claim 1, wherein at least two separate and independent flows are injected upward onto said contoured surface, said flows cooperating to create an overall aesthetic water effect on said contoured surface.

21. The water sculpture of claim 1, wherein said inclined portion of said contoured surface provides a wave forming structure whereby said sheet flow flows onto said wave forming structure and then arcs back upon itself so as to form a standing curling or spilling wave.

22. The water sculpture of claim 21, wherein the velocity of said flow is sufficient to enable said flow to flow upward onto said wave forming structure, wherein by the force of gravity said flow is returned substantially upon itself in a downward arc to form a curling or spilling wave.

2. A water sculpture, comprising:

a source of water;

an inclined flow supporting surface disposed adjacent said source of water, said inclined surface being substantially unbounded by lateral side walls; and

a sheet flow of water having relatively uniform thickness flowing upward onto said inclined surface, said flow of water conforming substantially to said inclined surface so as to form a free-standing flow shape upon said inclined surface.

3. The water sculpture of claim 2, wherein said inclined surface has an upper side and a lower side, wherein said flow is injected onto said surface proximate said lower side and flows upward such that said flow flows over said upper side.

4. The water sculpture of claim 3, wherein said inclined surface has a concave-up semi-cylindrical curvature thereon.

5. The water sculpture of claim 4, further comprising a nozzle for providing said sheet flow of water onto said surface, and wherein flow parameters of said nozzle are varied over time so as to create time-varying water flow effects on said surface.

6. The water sculpture of claim 2, wherein at least two separate and independent flows are injected upward onto said surface, each of said flows creating a water flow effect on said surface.

7. The water sculpture of claim 2, wherein a wave forming structure is located on said surface, said wave forming structure having a substantially concave curvature thereon, said sheet flow flowing onto said wave forming structure so as to form a spilling wave.

8. The water sculpture of claim 7, wherein said wave forming structure has both a horizontal and vertical curvature.

9. The water sculpture of claim 7;

wherein the velocity of said flow is sufficient to enable said flow to flow upward onto said wave forming structure, wherein by the force of gravity said flow is returned substantially upon itself in a downward arc to form a curling or spilling wave.

10. The water sculpture of claim 2, wherein said inclined surface has a lower portion, a middle portion, and an upper portion, said flow being injected onto said lower portion, and flowing onto said middle portion, and then onto said upper portion.

11. A water sculpture, comprising:

a curved surface sized and configured to support a flow of water thereon; and

a sheet flow of water flowing on said curved surface travelling in a predetermined direction, said curved surface having a substantially concave-up semi-cylindrical cylindrical configuration with an axis of symmetry substantially transverse to said direction of flow whereby various aesthetic effects are achieved as said sheet flow of water flows along said curved surface.

The water sculpture of claim 11, wherein said curved surface has a substantially inclined portion and a substantially declined portion whereby said flow initially flows downward along said declined portion of said curved surface, and then upward along said inclined portion of said curved surface.

13. A method of forming a water sculpture, comprising:

providing a contoured surface sized and configured to support a flow of water thereon, said contoured surface being substantially unbounded by lateral side walls such that water on said contoured surface is allowed to ventilate laterally;

injecting a sheet flow of water onto said contoured surface such that said flow conforms to said surface; and

allowing said flow of water to roll off said contoured surface and/or curl back upon itself thereby creating various ascetic water effects.

14. The method of claim 13, including the step of forming a curling wave.

15. The method of claim 13 including the step of varying the velocity of said flow so as to create a variety of time-varying water effects on said surface.

16. The method of claim 14, including the step of varying the flow parameters of said flow so as to create a variety of time-varying water effects on said surface.
