1. A method of exciting an ultrasonic stack in a surgical instrument wherein said stack includes a piezoelectric section located between a first and a second resonator wherein said method comprises the steps of:
- exciting said piezoelectric section by driving said section with an electrical excitation signal at a first frequency; and
simultaneously exciting said piezoelectric section by driving said section with an electrical excitation signal at a second frequency which is a multiple of said first frequency.

Abstract
An improved surgical instrument is described wherein, an ultrasonic stack includes one or more piezoelectric sections surrounded by at least first resonator section and a second resonator section. The excitation signal for the ultrasonic stack is adapted to provide power at a first and a second frequency in order to drive the surgical tip of the instrument at a first frequency and second frequency simultaneously.
