Magnetic disc cartridge and corresponding system/method for limiting copying of software
First Claim
1. A magnetic disc cartridge rotatably housing a magnetic disc and including magnetic means for erasing software from the disc after the software has been copied a predetermined number of times, the magnetic disc cartridge comprising:
- an upper housing portion;
a lower housing portion affixed around its entire periphery in a non-pivotal manner to said upper housing portion;
said magnetic disc sandwiched between said upper and lower housing portions;
a sliding shutter mounted on at least one of said upper and lower housing portions, said shutter including sliding means for opening and closing a head insert opening defined in the cartridge upon insertion and removal of the cartridge into and from a computer respectively; and
said magnetic means mounted on the cartridge for creating an erasing field proximate the disc after the software on the disc has been copied from the disc a predetermined number of times, said magnetic means also for erasing the software on the disc upon creation of said erasing field.

Abstract
A disc cartridge and corresponding method/system are provided for limiting the number of copies which may be made of software stored on a magnetic disc. According to certain embodiments, only a single copy of the software may be made from the disc, after which the software is erased from the disc by way of an erasing magnetic field. A magnet is provided on or within the disc cartridge so that after copying of the software from the first disc to a second disc, the magnet is energized so as to create an erasing magnetic or electromagnetic field proximate the first disc in order to erase the copied software therefrom, while an anti-copy signal is copied or otherwise sent along with the software from the first disc to the second disc so as to prevent later copying of the software from the second disc. According to certain other embodiments of this invention, a method/system is provided for erasing software from a disc using the above-discussed cartridge after a user attempting to copy the software enters an incorrect password a predetermined number of consecutive times.
