First Claim
1. A capacitive touch sensor for sensing a touch, comprising:
- a plurality of sensor bars configured in an arrangement wherein each bar is substantially parallel to a first axis and substantially perpendicular to a second axis; and
a control circuit coupled to said plurality of sensor bars to provide an excitation signal to the plurality of sensor bars, receive a capacitive sense signal, and generate a position signal indicative of a position of the touch on the arrangement, the position signal indicating the position along the first axis and the position along the second axis, wherein the control circuit is coupled to a first side of the sensor bars via a set of N lines and to a second side of the sensor bars via a set of M lines, wherein N and M are not equal.

Abstract
The present invention relates to a capacitive touch sensor including a plurality of horizontal sensor bars arranged in a single direction. The touch sensor preferably receives differential sensor signals from the sensor array to reduce proximity effects and noise associated with conventional capacitive touch sensors. The touch sensor also utilizes an isolation circuit or floating interface to reduce the effects of external interference and increase the accuracy of touch sensing and localization. The bars are preferably comprised of indium tin oxide oriented in the machine direction of roll for superior linearity. The touch sensor may be utilized with display screens having thick dielectrics and also eliminates the need for a rear guard layer.

1. A capacitive touch sensor for sensing a touch, comprising:

A method of locating the position of a touch on a touch sensor including an array of bars disposed parallel to a first axis and a control circuit providing excitation signals to a first side of the array, receiving sense signals at a second side of the array, providing excitation signals to the second side of the array and receiving sense signals at the first side of the array, the method comprising steps of:

determining a closest bar of the array of bars in response to the sense signals, the closest bar being a bar nearest the touch, thereby determining a first position of the touch along a second axis perpendicular to the first axis by determining a bar location of the closest bar in the array of bars; and determining a second position of the touch along the first axis by analyzing at least one of the sense signals received on the first side of the array and at least one of the sense signal received on the second side of the array. - View Dependent Claims (6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)

An improved capacitive touch screen for use with a display for providing images on a face, the touch screen situated proximate the face of the display, the touch screen including a control circuit for generating a position signal indicative of the vertical and horizontal location of a touch proximate the touch screen, the improvement comprising:
a capacitive sensor array consisting of parallel bars extending in a single direction, the parallel bars having a first end and a second end, the control circuit providing an excitation signal to the first end and the control circuit receiving a sense signal at the second end, the control circuit generating the position signal in response to the sense signal. - View Dependent Claims (13, 14)

15. A touch sensor for use with a touch screen having a sensor array, the touch sensor comprising:

a power supply; an excitation driver, coupled to the power supply, for providing an excitation signal; a control circuit, coupled to the power supply, the control circuit determining a location of a touch in response to a sense signal; and a floating interface circuit coupled to the power supply, the sensor array, the excitation driver, and the control circuit, the floating interface circuit receiving a power signal referenced to the excitation signal; wherein the excitation driver provides the excitation signal to the sensor array through the floating interface circuit and the control circuit receives the sense signal from the sensor array through the floating interface circuit. - View Dependent Claims (16)

An improved capacitive touch panel system including a capacitive sensor array including sensor bars and a control circuit, the control circuit providing an excitation signal to the sensor bars and receiving a capacitive sense signal from the sensor bars, the control circuit generating a control signal indicative of a position of a touch in response to the capacitive sense signal, and
a floating interface circuit referenced to the excitation signal, the interface circuit coupled between the control circuit and the capacitive sensor array, wherein the control circuit is referenced to ground, the capacitive sense signal being a difference signal associated with at least two of the sensor bars.

21. A capacitive touch sensor for sensing a position of a touch, the capacitive touch sensor comprising:

an array of non-intersecting bars disposed along a first axis; and a control circuit coupled to the array of the non-intersecting bars to provide excitation signals to at least one pair of the non-intersecting bars at a first side of the non-intersecting bars and receive a differential signal from the at least one pair at a second side of the non-intersecting bars, the control circuit providing a control signal indicative of the position of the touch on the array in response to the differential signal, the control signal indicating the position along the first axis. - View Dependent Claims (22)
