1. A device for providing a plain image signal indicative of a plain image of surface characteristics of a plurality of fingers on a hand, comprising:

  • a plain platen prism, including a flat, rectangular shaped finger receiving surface having a width and a height shorter than the width, the width divided by the height defining a platen aspect ratio that is greater than 1.1;

    1;

    an illumination source for internally illuminating the finger receiving surface such that a plain image of the surface characteristics of the fingers is formed, and wherein the plain image leaves the platen prism from an image side surface in a direction transverse to a direction of the height of the finger receiving surface;

    a camera having a rectangular receiving surface having a camera aspect ratio of greater than 1.1;

    1 and less than the platen aspect ratio, said camera being structured and arranged to receive the plain image and to provide the plain image signal in response thereto; and

    optical elements structured and arranged to direct the plain image to the camera, including refracting elements structured and arranged to change the aspect ratio of the plain image to approximately equal the camera aspect ratio.
