Abstract

An implant and coverings for an implant for use in the human body are disclosed. Coverings for implants are constructed to present a biocompatible surface to the body and to provide a textured surface which serves to disorganize scar tissue which forms around the implant. Filaments of expanded PTFEe are attached to a stretch fabric backing in a loose weave configuration. Silicone molded in geometric patterns may be employed to present a textured surface. Compressive structures may be beneficially used on the surface of the implant or in the interior of the implant. Foam is one such compressive structure. Hexagonally shaped compressive cells containing fluid, gas, gel or foam are adapted to receive an insert which contains an outer biocompatible coating. A valve or port is provided to communicate between the cell and the body. Expansion means may be provided to expand the implant in a desired direction.

Claims

1. A free-floating covering for an implant comprising,

an exterior material comprising PTFEe tubes slit in a lengthwise manner which substantially cover the implant,

an anchor substrate to which the exterior material is attached, wherein the covering is not attached to the implant.

2. A free-floating covering for an implant comprising,

an exterior material comprising at least one PTFEe structure cut in a corona configuration which substantially cover the implant, and

an anchor substrate to which the exterior material is attached, wherein the covering is not attached to the implant.

3. A free floating covering for an implant, the space between the implant and the covering defining a volume, the implant and covering being adapted for implantation into a biological system including a fluid, comprising:

an exterior expanded fluoropolymer covering,

the fluoropolymer covering enveloping the implant,

characterized in that the fluid in the biological system may permeate through the free floating covering to occupy the said volume.

4. The free floating covering of claim 3 wherein the expanded fluoropolymer is expanded PTFE.

5. The covering of claim 3 wherein the expanded fluoropolymer is TFE.

6. The free floating covering of claim 3 wherein the expanded fluoropolymer covering includes cuts through the covering.

7. The free floating covering of claim 3 wherein the covering comprises two or more sections, those sections being attached to one another by sewing.
