Abstract

A press for printing an electrical circuit component directly onto a substrate with an electrically-conductive liquid includes a press surface having a printing direction and a direction transverse thereto. A plurality of liquid-carrying cells are disposed on the press surface for carrying the electrically-conductive liquid, the cells being in liquid communication with each other in both the printing direction and in the transverse direction. A method of making such a press includes the steps of providing a press surface and engraving the press surface with the plurality of liquid-carrying cells which are in liquid communication with each other in both the printing direction and in the transverse direction.

Claims

1. A press for printing an electrically-conductive liquid directly onto a substrate, comprising:

a press surface having a printing direction and a direction transverse thereto; and

a plurality of liquid-carrying cells disposed on said press surface for carrying the electrically-conductive liquid, said cells being in liquid communication with each other, below a surface of said press surface, in (i) the printing direction, in (ii) the transverse direction, and in (iii) directions oblique thereto.

2. A press according to claim 1, wherein said press comprises a cylinder having said press surface disposed on a circumferential face thereof.

3. A press according to claim 1, wherein said press surface defines a plurality of cell walls disposed between said cells, said cell walls being oriented in an oblique angle with respect to both the printing direction and the transverse direction.

4. A press according to claim 3, wherein said oblique angle is within the range of substantially thirty degrees to substantially sixty degrees.

5. A press according to claim 3, wherein said cell walls are disposed at two oblique angles with respect to both the printing direction and the transverse direction.

6. A press according to claim 3, wherein said cell walls are disposed such that a doctor blade support surface is provided in the transverse direction across the entire press surface.

7. A press according to claim 1, wherein each cell has (i) a central portion and (ii) at least one liquid communication portion which is in liquid communication with another cell, the central portion being deeper than the liquid communication portion.

8. A press according to claim 7, wherein each cell has a liquid communication portion in the printing direction, and a liquid communication portion in the transverse direction.

9. A press according to claim 8, wherein the transverse direction liquid communication portion of one cell is in liquid communication with a printing direction liquid communication portion of another cell.

10. A printing roller for printing an electrically-conductive liquid directly onto a flexible substrate, comprising:

a cylinder having a polished surface disposed about a circumferential face thereof, said surface having a printing direction and a direction transverse thereto; and

a plurality of liquid-carrying cells in said surface, for carrying the electrically-conductive liquid, at least one cell having a first liquid communication portion in liquid communication with a cell adjacent in the printing direction, said at least one cell also having a second liquid communication portion in liquid communication with a cell adjacent in the transverse direction, said first and second liquid communication portions being disposed below said polished surface.

11. A printing roller according to claim 10, wherein the plurality of liquid-carrying cells are disposed in the shape of an electrical circuit component having electrically-conductive pathways extending in the printing direction and in the transverse direction.

12. A roller according to claim 10, wherein each liquid-carrying cell has a central portion and a liquid communication portion which is shallower than the central portion.

13. A roller according to claim 10, wherein said plurality of liquid-carrying cells are disposed in a plurality of columns each column extending in the printing direction, and wherein more than 165 columns of cells are provided per inch of the transverse direction.

14. A roller according to claim 13, wherein said plurality of cells are disposed in substantially 200 columns of cells per inch in the transverse direction.

15. A printing press for directly printing a plurality of electrical circuits onto a substrate, comprising:

a printing surface for contacting the substrate during the direct printing operation; and

an array of liquid-carrying cells disposed on said printing surface, for carrying an electrically-conductive liquid which is deposited on the substrate when said printing surface contacts the substrate during the direct printing operation, said array of cells comprising a plurality of patterns each of which comprises an electrical circuit pattern, each electrical circuit pattern having continuous pathways in a printing direction and in a direction oblique thereto so that when the electrically-conductive liquid is carried by said cells, the liquid in each electrical circuit pattern is conductive in both the printing direction and in the oblique direction.

16. A press according to claim 15, further comprising a plurality of cell walls disposed between said cells, said cell walls having an upper surface which is parallel to said printing surface, at least one portion of each cell wall being oriented in a direction oblique to the printing direction.

17. A press according to claim 16, further comprising a doctor blade in contact with said printing surface, for scraping excess liquid from said press, said doctor blade being supported by the cell wall upper surfaces so that the doctor blade never moves below said printing surface.

18. A press according to claim 15, wherein each cell has liquid communication portions extending in both the printing direction in a direction transverse thereto.

19. A press according to claim 15, wherein said cells are disposed in the shape of a plurality of electrical circuits, wherein each electrical circuit shape has an electrically conductive pathway extending in the print direction and in the oblique direction.

20. A printing press for directly printing an electrically-conductive liquid onto a substrate, comprising:

a printing surface for contacting the substrate during the direct printing operation, said surface having a print direction and a direction transverse thereto; and

a plurality of cells disposed on said printing surface, for carrying the conductive liquid, said cells being disposed such that carried liquid is electrically-conductive, below the printing surface, in both the printing direction and in the transverse direction, said plurality of cells being disposed to deposit the conductive liquid onto the substrate during the direct printing operation.

21. A press according to claim 20, further comprising a pinch surface disposed on the opposite side of the substrate from said printing surface, for supporting the substrate during the direct printing operation, the printing surface and the pinch surface being disposed to cause the conductive liquid in the cells to be transferred to the substrate during the direct printing operation.

22. A press according to claim 21, wherein the plurality of cells is disposed such that the conductive liquid is carried in a plurality of electrically-conductive pathways, at least one pathway extending in the printing direction and at least one pathway extending in the transverse direction.

23. A press according to claim 20, wherein each cell has a central portion, a first liquid communication portion extending in the print direction, and a second liquid communication portion extending in the transverse direction, the first and second liquid communication portions being shallower than the central portion.

24. A press according to claim 23, wherein a first liquid communication portion of one cell intersects the second liquid communication portion of a neighboring cell.

25. A press according to claim 20, further comprising a plurality of cell walls respectively disposed between said plurality of cells, the plurality of cell walls being discontinuous in both the printing direction and in the transverse direction.
