A pharmaceutical composition for delivery from an osmotic dosage form for administering an antiepileptic drug in the gastrointestinal tract having a pH of 1 to 8 of a patient, comprising 0.5 wt % to 90 wt % of an antiepileptic drug, and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier comprising 10 wt % to 75 wt % of a carboxymethylcellulose, and 0.1 wt % to 25 wt % of a polyvinylpyrrolidone, said pharmaceutical composition when administered orally from the osmotic dosage form comprising means for protecting the antiepileptic drug from the gastrointestinal tract pH of 1 to 8, releases a dose of antiepileptic drug to the patient for providing an antiepileptic level in the blood as a function of the osmotic dosage form which lessens the incidence of epilepsy.
