Abstract

An image processing apparatus for color image formation that adds a specific pattern to identify the apparatus more reliably, to image information. For example, in a bit array of a printer'"'"'s identification number in binary representation, if one bit has a value "0", the value of input multivalued image data in a M-th line in a subscanning direction is decremented by "30". On the other hand, if the bit value is "1", the data of the input multivalued image data is incremented by "30". If the data value has been incremented by "30" in the M-th line, data value at a position immediately below the position where the data valued has been incremented (decremented) in the next (M+1)-th line is decremented by "30", while if the data value has been decremented by "30" in the M-th line, data value at a position immediately below the position where the data value has been incremented (decremented) in the next (M+1)-th line is incremented by "30".

Claims

1. An image processing controller for supplying image data to an image forming apparatus for forming an image on a medium at a plurality of resolutions, comprising:

input means for inputting image data;

adding means for adding information for identifying the image forming apparatus, to the input image data; and

control means for controlling the image forming apparatus such that the portion of the image to which the information is added is formed at a lower resolution of the plurality of resolutions.

2. The controller according to claim 1, wherein said adding means adds the information to the input image data so that overall tonality of the image is not visually changed.

3. The controller according to claim 1, wherein said control means further controls the image forming apparatus such that another portion of the image to which the information is not added is formed at a higher resolution of the plurality of resolutions.

4. The controller according to claim 1, further comprising output means for outputting the image data having the added information to the image forming apparatus.

5. The controller according to claim 1, wherein the input image data includes a multivalued color image signal.

The controller according to claim 5, further comprising compensation means for compensating modulation caused in the multivalued color image signal due to addition of the information, by performing reverse modulation on a part of the multivalued color image signal representing a neighboring portion of the image on the recording medium represented by the multivalued color image signal to which the information is added.

7. The controller according to claim 6, wherein said adding means adds the information to the image data, as a specific pattern at predetermined intervals regarding a first direction of the recording medium and a second direction orthogonal to the first direction.

The controller according to claim 7, wherein said adding means adds the information to the multivalued color image signal so that the specific pattern of the information is represented on the recording medium along the first direction, from an N-th pixel in the first direction on an M-th line in the second direction, and

wherein said compensation means performs the reverse modulation, on a multivalued color image signal representing pixels along the first direction from the N-th pixel in the first direction on a (M+1)-th line in the second direction.

9. The controller according to claim 1, wherein the information is added so as to be difficult to discriminate with human eyes.

10. The controller according to claim 1, wherein the information relates to apparatus identification data given by a supplier who supplies the controller.

11. The controller according to claim 5, wherein the multivalued color image signal comprises cyan, magenta, yellow and black component signals, and wherein the information is added to the yellow component signal.

12. The controller according to claim 1, further comprising storage means for storing the information.

13. The controller according to claim 12, wherein said storage means stores a manufactured serial number of the image forming apparatus, a name of a manufacturer company of the apparatus, or a secret code, as the information.

14. An image processing method adopted to a controller for processing image data and supplying the processed image data to an image forming unit for forming an image on a medium at a plurality of resolutions, comprising:

an input step of inputting image data;

an adding step of adding information for identifying the image forming unit to the input image data;

a control step of controlling the image forming unit such that a portion of the image to which the information is added is formed at a lower resolution of the plurality of resolutions.

15. The method according to claim 14, wherein the information is added so that overall tonality of the image is not visually changed.

16. The method according to claim 14, wherein at said control step, the image forming unit is controlled such that another portion of the image to which the information is not added is formed at a higher resolution of the plurality of resolutions.

17. The method according to claim 14, further comprising an output step of outputting the image data having the added information to the image forming unit.

18. The method according to claim 14, wherein the input image data includes a multivalued color image signal.

19. The method according to claim 18, further comprising a compensation step of compensating modulation caused in the multivalued color image signal due to addition of the information, by performing reverse modulation on a part of the multivalued color image signal representing a neighboring portion of the image on the recording medium represented by the multivalued color image signal to which the information is added.

20. The method according to claim 18, wherein as said adding step, the information is added to the image data, as a specific pattern at predetermined intervals regarding a first direction of the recording medium and a second direction orthogonal to the first direction.

21. The method according to claim 19, wherein at said adding step, the information is added to the multivalued color image signal so that the specific pattern of the information is represented on the recording medium along the first direction, from an N-th pixel in the first direction on an M-th line in the second direction, and

wherein at said compensation step, the reverse modulation is performed on a multivalued color image signal representing pixels along the first direction from the N-th pixel in the first direction on a (M+1)-th line in the second direction.

22. The method according to claim 14, wherein the information is added so as to be difficult to discriminate with human eyes.

23. The method according to claim 14, wherein the information relates to apparatus identification data given by a supplier who supplies the controller.

24. The method according to claim 18, wherein the multivalued color image signal comprises cyan, magenta, yellow and black component signals, and wherein the information is added to the yellow component signal.

25. An image processing apparatus for forming an image on a printing medium at a plurality of resolutions comprising:

input means for inputting image data;

image forming means for forming an image based on the image data; and

adding means for adding information for identifying the apparatus to an image represented by the input image data,

wherein a portion of the image to which the information is added is formed at a lower resolution of the plurality of resolutions.

26. The apparatus according to claim 25, wherein said adding means adds the information to the input image data so that overall tonality of the image is not visually changed.

27. The apparatus according to claim 25, further comprising control means for controlling said image forming means such that another portion of the image in which the information is not added is formed in a higher resolution of the plurality of resolutions.

28. The apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the input image data includes a multivalued color image signal.

29. The apparatus according to claim 28, further comprising compensation means for compensating modulation caused in the multivalued color image signal due to addition of the information, by performing reverse modulation on a part of the multivalued color image signal representing a neighboring portion of the image on the recording medium represented by the multivalued color image signal to which the information is added.

30. The apparatus according to claim 29, wherein said adding means adds the information to the image data, as a specific pattern at predetermined intervals regarding a first direction of the recording medium and a second direction orthogonal to the first direction.

31. The apparatus according to claim 30, wherein said adding means adds the information to the multivalued color image signal so that the specific pattern of the information is represented on the recording medium along the first direction, from an N-th pixel in the first direction on an M-th line in the second direction, and

wherein said compensation means performs the reverse modulation, on a multivalued color image signal representing pixels along the first direction from the N-th pixel in the first direction on a (M+1)-th line in the second direction.

32. The apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the information is added so as to be difficult to discriminate with human eyes.

33. The apparatus according to claim 25, wherein the information relates to apparatus identification data given by a supplier who supplies the controller.

34. The apparatus according to claim 28, wherein the multivalued color image signal comprises cyan, magenta, yellow and black component signals, and wherein the information is added to the yellow component signal.

35. The apparatus according to claim 25, further comprising storage means for storing the information.

36. The apparatus according to claim 35, wherein said storage means stores a manufactured serial number of the image forming apparatus, a name of a manufacturer company of the apparatus, or a secret code, as the information.

37. The apparatus according to claim 28, wherein said image forming means forms an image in accordance with electrophotographic method.

38. An image processing method adopted to an image processing unit for forming an image in a plurality of resolutions comprising:

an input step of inputting image data;

an adding step of adding information for identifying the unit to the input image data;

an image forming step of forming an image based on the image data having the added information;

a control step of controlling image formation at said image forming step such that a portion of the image to which the information is added is formed in a lower resolution of the plurality of resolutions.

39. The method according to claim 38, wherein at said adding step, the information is added so that an overall tonality of the image is not visually changed.

40. The method according to claim 38, wherein said control step further controls image formation at said image forming step such that another portion of the image in which the information is not added is formed in a higher resolution of the plurality of resolutions.

41. The method according to claim 38, wherein the input image data includes a multivalued color image signal.

42. The method according to claim 41, further comprising a compensation step of compensating modulation caused in the multivalued color image signal due to addition of the information, by performing reverse modulation on a part of the multivalued color image signal representing a neighboring portion of the image on the recording medium represented by the multivalued color image signal to which the information is added.

43. The method according to claim 41, wherein as said adding step, the information is added to the image data, as a specific pattern at predetermined intervals regarding a first direction of the recording medium and a second direction orthogonal to the first direction.

44. The method according to claim 42, wherein at said adding step, the information is added to the multivalued color image signal so that the specific pattern of the information is represented on the recording medium along the first direction, from an N-th pixel in the first direction on an M-th line in the second direction, and

wherein at said compensation step, the reverse modulation is performed on a multivalued color image signal representing pixels along the first direction from the N-th pixel in the first direction on a (M+1)-th line in the second direction.

45. The method according to claim 38, wherein the information is added so as to be difficult to discriminate with human eyes.

46. The method according to claim 38, wherein the information relates to apparatus identification data given by a supplier who supplies the controller.

47. The method according to claim 41, wherein the multivalued color image signal comprises cyan, magenta, yellow and black component signals, and wherein the information is added to the yellow component signal.
