1. A broadband light source for optical fiber comprising:

  • a first length of rare earth doped optical fiber;

    a pump source coupled into said fiber for exciting spontaneous optical emission in said fiber; and

    a long period grating coupled to said rare earth doped fiber for flattening and broadening the spectral output of optical emission from said fiber, said long period grating comprising a length of fiber having a plurality of index perturbations of width w spaced apart by a periodic distance Λ

    where 10 μ

    2000 μ

    m, wherein the periodic distance Λ

    is selected to shift, substantially without reflection, transmitted light in the region of a selected wavelength α

    p from a guided mode into a non-guided mode, thereby reducing in intensity a band of light centered about λ
