Nozzle and spray head for a sprinkler
First Claim
1. A nozzle for a sprinkler which is connectible to a source of water under pressure, said nozzle having an inlet, an outlet and a flow passage extending between the inlet and the outlet, said outlet having far stream and near stream portions and being unpartitioned between said far stream and near stream portions whereby a single stream can be emitted from the outlet, said far stream portion having a center, said flow passage having a far stream portion and a near stream portion leading to the far stream and near stream portions, respectively of said outlet, said flow passage being unpartitioned between said far stream and near stream portions of said flow passage, said far stream portion of the flow passage converging toward the center of the far stream portion of the outlet as it extends toward said outlet and said near stream portion of the flow passage being less convergent toward the center of the far stream portion of the outlet as it extends toward the outlet than the far stream portion of the flow passage whereby the far stream portion of the flow passage provides a portion of the stream which travels farther than the portion of the stream which is provided by the near stream portion of the flow passage.

Abstract
A sprinkler nozzle for use in irrigation having an inlet, an outlet and a flow passage extending between the inlet and the outlet. The outlet and the flow passage each have near stream and far stream portions and the nozzle is unpartitioned between the near stream and far stream portions so that a single stream can be emitted from the outlet. The far stream and near stream portions of the flow passage are configured to provide higher velocity less turbulent flow through the far stream portion of the outlet than through the near stream portion of the outlet. The nozzle includes a peripheral wall which has a main body and a hood with the hood being radially offset from the main body to form an opening. The nozzle is received in a bore and nozzle mounting structure of a spray head for a sprinkler. The hood has an abutment partly defining the opening which is engageable by a tool for withdrawing the nozzle from the bore.

10. A nozzle for a sprinkler which is connectible to a source of water under pressure, said nozzle having an inlet, an outlet and a flow passage extending between the inlet and the outlet, said outlet having far stream and near stream portions and being unpartitioned between said far stream and near stream portions whereby a single stream can be emitted from the outlet, said flow passage having a far stream portion and a near stream portion leading to the far stream and near stream portions, respectively of said outlet, said flow passage being unpartitioned between said far stream and near stream portions of said flow passage, said far stream and near stream portions of the flow passage being configured to provide higher velocity less turbulent flow through the far stream portion of the outlet than through the near stream portion of the outlet.
- 11. A nozzle for a sprinkler which is connectible to a source of water under pressure, said nozzle having an inlet, an outlet and a flow passage extending between the inlet and the outlet, said outlet having far stream and near stream portions and being unpartitioned between said far stream and near stream portions whereby a single stream can be emitted from the outlet, said flow passage having a far stream portion and a near stream portion leading to the far stream and near stream portions, respectively of said outlet, said flow passage being unpartitioned between said far stream and near stream portions of said flow passage, said nozzle having an inlet section of larger cross sectional area than the combined cross sectional areas of the far stream and near stream portions of the flow passage, said inlet section being upstream of the far stream and near stream portions of the flow passage and said flow passage having a turbulence creating surface between the inlet section and the near stream portion of the flow passage for causing turbulence in the water flowing from the inlet section to the near stream portion of the flow passage.
- 13. A nozzle for a sprinkler which is connectible to a source of water under pressure, said nozzle having a peripheral wall, an inlet, an outlet and a flow passage extending between the inlet and the outlet, said outlet having a generally circular portion and a generally rectangular portion of smaller cross sectional area than the generally circular portion, said outlet being unpartitioned between said generally circular and generally rectangular portions whereby a single stream can be emitted from the outlet, said flow passage having a converging surface leading to the generally circular portion of said outlet and a less converging surface leading to a generally rectangular portion of said outlet, said flow passage being unpartitioned between said converging and less converging surfaces of said flow passage.

19. A spray head for a sprinkler which is connectible to a source of water under pressure, said spray head comprising:
-
a nozzle having a peripheral wall, an inlet and an outlet and a flow passage extending between the inlet and the outlet; nozzle mounting structure having a circumferential wall defining a bore and a supply passage for conveying water under pressure to said bore, said nozzle being received in said bore to receive water under pressure from the supply passage of the nozzle mounting structure so the water can pass through the flow passage and the outlet to form a stream, the pressure of the water tending to pivot the nozzle in said bore about an axis which is generally transverse to said flow passage to thereby tend to separate regions of said peripheral wall and said circumferential wall to form a leakage path from the supply passage; and said peripheral wall having an opening which provides an exit from said leakage path whereby any water in the leakage path passes through said exit and is directed toward the stream downstream of the outlet of the nozzle. - View Dependent Claims (20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25)
