Abstract

An access subnetwork provides broadcast access transport as well as selective allocation of resources for interactive communications sessions dedicated to individual end users. The access subnetwork has specified broadcast and interactive service interfaces, both for communications to and from an information provider and for communication to and from customer premises equipment. An Access Subnetwork Controller provides a single point of control contact within the access subnetwork. Any other subnetwork (typically an element of a higher level control subnetwork) needing a control function in the access subnetwork always sends the request for that function to the Access Subnetwork Controller. The primary responsibility of the Access Subnetwork Controller is to control resources, provide requested resources and monitor the use of resources within in the realm of the access subnetwork. The Access Subnetwork Controller functions essentially in a similar manner to provide every type of requested connection, whether the connection is for broadcast, pay-per-view or Interactive Multimedia Television (IMTV). Specifically, the Access Subnetwork Controller reserves and enables access subnetwork resources for a particular user connection and reports connections back to higher level control elements.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

receiving a request for communication with one of a plurality of user terminals;

determining the availability of resources within an access subnetwork serving the user terminals for the requested communication;

reserving available resources within the access subnetwork for the requested communication with the one user terminal;

transmitting a reply message indicating that the resources are available for the requested communication with the one user terminal; and

enabling communication with the one user terminal through the reserved resources.

2. A method as in claim 1, wherein the reply message includes an identifier needed to utilize the reserved resources.

3. A method as in claim 2, wherein the identifier identifies a port of the access subnetwork for accessing the reserved resources.

4. A method as in claim 2, wherein the reserved resources transmit a channel through the network to at least the one user terminal, and the identifier identifies the channel.

5. A method as in claim 4, wherein the identifier of the channel identifies an RF channel and at least one packet identifier for capturing a predetermined group of packets from a stream of packets of digital program information carried on the RF channel.

6. A method as in claim 2, wherein the identifier identifies a virtual-path identifier (VPI) and a virtual circuit identifier (VCI) for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) transport of signals to the reserved resources.

7. A method as in claim 1, wherein:

the step of receiving comprises receiving the request for communication with the one user terminal at an access subnetwork controller from a network gateway control element;

the step of transmitting a reply message comprises transmitting the reply message from the access subnetwork controller to the network gateway control element, the reply message including an identifier needed to utilize the reserved resources.

8. In a network comprising:

a plurality of user terminals receiving and processing broadband information;

an access subnetwork for distributing broadcast information signals to the user terminals;

a method comprising;

receiving a request to provide a connection for one broadcast information signal through the access subnetwork;

allocating resources of the access subnetwork to the broadcast connection to broadcast the one broadcast information signal through at least a portion of the access subnetwork;

receiving a request to add a predetermined one of the user terminals to the broadcast connection;

in response to the request to add the predetermined user terminal, providing an instruction to at least one component of the access subnetwork to enable reception of the one broadcast information signal by the predetermined user terminal.

9. A method as in claim 8, wherein:

the step of receiving the request for the broadcast connection comprises receiving a request for a broadcast communication link of a specified bandwidth from a network gateway control element and;

the step of allocating resources comprises;

(i) determining the availability of resources within the access subnetwork for broadcasting the one information signal at the specified bandwidth,

(ii) reserving available resources within the access subnetwork for broadcasting the one information signal at the specified bandwidth, and

(iii) providing an instruction to the reserved resources to enable broadcasting of the one information signal at the specified bandwidth.

10. A method as in claim 9, wherein:

the reserved resources receive the one information signal in a sequence of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells, each cell in the sequence having an ATM cell identifier,

the reserved resources convert data contained in payloads of the ATM cells into data packets, and

the instruction to the reserved resources defines one or more packet identifiers to be inserted into the data packets constructed from data from cells having the ATM cell identifier.

11. A method as in claim 10, wherein the ATM cell identifier comprises a virtual-path identifier (VPI) value and a virtual circuit identifier (VCI) value.

12. A method as in claim 8, wherein the step of receiving a request to add the predetermined terminal comprises receiving an identification of the one information signal and the one user terminal at an access subnetwork controller from a network gateway control element.

13. A method as in claim 8, wherein the at least one component of the access subnetwork is a host digital terminal for selectively switching broadcast signals through to a group of user terminals including the predetermined user terminal, and the instruction provided to the host digital terminal indicates an authorization for switching the broadcast information signal upon a subsequent request by the predetermined user terminal.

14. A method as in claim 8, wherein the at least one component of the access subnetwork is a network interface module connected to the predetermined user terminal, and the instruction provided to the network interface module permits decryption of the broadcast information signal.

15. A method for controlling an access subnetwork comprising:

receiving a request for communication with one of a plurality of user terminals;

determining the availability of resources within an access subnetwork serving the user terminals for the requested communication and controlled by the access subnetwork controller;

reserving available resources within the access subnetwork for the requested communication with the one user terminal;

transmitting a reply message indicating that the resources are available for the requested communication with the one user terminal; and

transmitting an instruction to at least one component of the access subnetwork to enable communication with the one user terminal through the reserved resources.

16. A network comprising:

a plurality of user terminals receiving and processing broadband information;

an access subnetwork for distributing broadcast information signals to the user terminals; and

an access subnetwork controller for;

receiving a request to provide a connection for one broadcast information signal through the access subnetwork;

allocating resources of the access subnetwork to the broadcast connection;

receiving a request to add a predetermined one of the user terminals to the broadcast connection;

in response to the request to add the predetermined user terminal, providing an instruction to at least one component of the access subnetwork to enable reception of the one broadcast information signal by the predetermined user terminal.

17. In a network comprising:

a plurality of user terminals receiving and processing broadband information;

a backbone subnetwork providing point-to-point communication sessions;

an access subnetwork receiving broadcast information signals and distributing the broadcast information signals to authorized ones of the user terminals;

an access subnetwork controller controlling the access subnetwork; and

a gateway providing high level network control,

a method, comprising;

receiving a request for a dedicated communication with one of the user terminals at the access subnetwork controller from the gateway;

determining the availability of resources within the access subnetwork for the requested communication;

reserving available resources within the access subnetwork for the requested communication with the one user terminal;

transmitting a reply message indicating that the resources are available for the requested communication with the one user terminal to the gateway, the reply message including at least one identifier associated with the reserved resources;

receiving downstream transmissions from the gateway at an interface of the access subnetwork to a point-to-point connection with the backbone subnetwork; and

transmitting an instruction to at least one component of the access subnetwork to enable transport of the downstream transmissions to the one user terminal through the reserved resources.

18. A method as in claim 17, wherein the identifier identifies a virtual-path identifier (VPI) and a virtual circuit identifier (VCI) for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) transport of signals through the backbone subnetwork to the interface of the access subnetwork.

19. A method as in claim 17, wherein the at least one component of the access subnetwork is a host digital terminal for selectively switching broadcast signals through to a group of user terminals including the one user terminal, and the instruction provided to the host digital terminal indicates an authorization for switching the downstream transmissions to the one user terminal.

20. A method as in claim 17, wherein the at least one component of the access subnetwork is a network interface module connected to the one user terminal, and the instruction provided to the network interface module permits decryption of the downstream transmissions.

21. A method as in claim 17, wherein the reserved resources transmit a channel through the access subnetwork, and the identifier identifies the channel.

22. A method as in claim 21, wherein the identifier of the channel identifies an RF channel and at least one packet identifier for capturing a predetermined group of packets from a stream of packets carried on the RF channel.

23. A method as in claim 17, wherein:

the reserved resources receive the downstream transmission in a sequence of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells, each cell in the sequence having an ATM cell identifier,

the at least one component of the access subnetwork converts data contained in payloads of the ATM cells into data packets, and

the instruction to the at least one component of the access subnetwork defines one or more packet identifiers to be inserted into the data packets constructed from data from cells having the ATM cell identifier.

24. A method as in claim 18, wherein the ATM cell identifier comprises a virtual-path identifier (VPI) value and a virtual circuit identifier (VCI) value.

25. A method as in claim 18, wherein the data packets are in Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) format.

26. In a network comprising:

a plurality of user terminals receiving and processing broadband information;

a plurality of information provider systems;

a backbone subnetwork providing point-to-point communication sessions;

an access subnetwork receiving broadcast information signals and distributing the broadcast information signals to authorized ones of the user terminals;

an access subnetwork controller controlling the access subnetwork; and

a gateway providing high level network control,

a method, comprising;

receiving a request for a dedicated communication with one of the user terminals at the access subnetwork controller from the gateway;

determining the availability of resources within the access subnetwork for the requested communication;

reserving available resources within the access subnetwork for the requested communication with the one user terminal;

transmitting a reply message indicating that the resources are available for the requested communication with the one user terminal to the gateway, the reply message including at least one identifier associated with the reserved resources;

receiving downstream transmissions from one of the information provider systems at an interface of the access subnetwork to a point-to-point connection with the backbone subnetwork;

transmitting an instruction to at least one component of the access subnetwork to enable transport of the downstream transmissions to the one user terminal through the reserved resources.

27. A method as in claim 26, wherein the identifier identifies a virtual-path identifier (VPI) and a virtual circuit identifier (VCI) for asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) transport of signals through the backbone subnetwork to the interface of the access subnetwork.

28. A method as in claim 26, wherein the at least one component of the access subnetwork is a host digital terminal for selectively switching broadcast signals through to a group of user terminals including the one user terminal, and the instruction provided to the host digital terminal indicates an authorization for switching the downstream transmissions to the one user terminal.

29. A method as in claim 26, wherein the at least one component of the access subnetwork is a network interface module connected to the one user terminal, and the instruction provided to the network interface module permits decryption of the downstream transmissions.

30. A method as in claim 26, wherein the reserved resources transmit a channel through the access subnetwork, and the identifier identifies the channel.

31. A method as in claim 30, wherein the identifier of the channel identifies an RF channel and at least one packet identifier for capturing a predetermined group of packets from a stream of packets carried on the RF channel.

32. A method as in claim 26, wherein:

the reserved resources receive the downstream transmission in a sequence of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) cells, each cell in the sequence having an ATM cell identifier,

the at least one component of the access subnetwork converts data contained in payloads of the ATM cells into data packets, and

the instruction to the at least one component of the access subnetwork defines one or more packet identifiers to be inserted into the data packets constructed from data from cells having the ATM cell identifier.

33. A method as in claim 32, wherein the ATM cell identifier comprises a virtual-path identifier (VPI) value and a virtual circuit identifier (VCI) value.

34. A method as in claim 32, wherein the data packets are in Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) format.
