Abstract

The liquid removal system of the present invention is designed to permit efficient liquid removal as needed through the use of an interface device. The interface device is provided with a membrane which has and is capable of maintaining a vacuum on one side so that when liquid contacts the opposite side of the membrane the liquid passes through the membrane and is removed from the interface device by a maintained vacuum to a receptacle for disposal. When used as a female external catheter system, the present invention is designed to remove urine from incontinent female hospital and nursing home patients and even patients under home care.

Claims

1. A liquid removal system comprising:

a) an interface device, said interface device comprising an entrance zone and a second zone and having a porous membrane separating said entrance zone from said second zone, said second zone having a vacuum source connected thereto by means of a drain tube;

said porous membrane being capable of maintaining a vacuum in said second zone without permitting air from said entrance zone to pass through said membrane into said second zone when said membrane has been wetted with a first liquid;

said vacuum being maintained until said membrane is contacted with a second liquid;

and wherein said second liquid upon entering said entrance zone and contacting said porous membrane is removed from said entrance zone by said vacuum in said second zone by passing through said porous membrane into said second zone.

2. A liquid removal system according to claim 1 wherein said porous membrane has a plurality of pores having a pore size of about 5 to about 30 microns.

3. A liquid removal system according to claim 1 wherein said porous membrane when wetted with said first liquid supports a vacuum of about 5 to about 60 inches of water without permitting air to pass through said porous membrane.

A liquid removal system according to claim 1 wherein said porous membrane remains wetted with a liquid after said second liquid passes through said membrane such that said porous membrane remains capable of maintaining a vacuum in said second zone without permitting air to pass through said membrane.

5. A liquid removal system according to claim 1 wherein said entrance zone contains an open celled reticulated foam.

6. A liquid removal system according to claim 1 wherein said entrance zone contains a wicking material.

7. A liquid removal system according to claim 1 wherein said first liquid is glycerin.

8. A liquid removal system according to claim 1 wherein said vacuum source is a pump.

9. A liquid removal system according to claim 8 wherein said pump is connected to a pressure transducer which maintains a preselected vacuum.

10. A liquid removal system according to claim 1 wherein said entrance zone is capable of directing liquid to the porous membrane.

11. The liquid removal system of claim 1 wherein said second liquid is urine.

12. The liquid removal system of claim 1 wherein said interface device has a patient contact surface comprised of a flexible, fluid impervious material and is provided with an opening to receive urine.

13. The liquid removal system according to claim 12 wherein an open-surfaced, shape retaining material is on at least one side of said porous membrane.

14. The liquid removal system according to claim 13 wherein said open-surfaced, shape retaining material is an open celled reticulated foam.

15. The liquid removal system according to claim 13 wherein said open-surfaced, shape retaining material is a wicking material.

16. The liquid removal system according to claim 12 wherein said porous membrane has a pore size of about 5 to 30 microns.

17. The liquid removal system according to claim 12 wherein said vacuum source comprises a pump.

18. The liquid removal system according to claim 17 wherein said pump is connected to a pressure transducer which maintains a preselected vacuum.

19. The liquid removal system according to claim 17 wherein said urine passes form said interface device to a vacuum bottle between said interface device and said pump.

20. The liquid removal system according to any of claims 11-19 further comprising an external dam around said entrance zone.

21. The liquid removal system according to claim 20 wherein said dam is comprised of a foam material.

22. The liquid removal system according to claim 21 wherein said dam contains a bump at the portion of the dam that contacts the region of the body between the anus and the vagina.

23. The liquid removal system according to claim 21 wherein said dam has a sealing material on the surface which will contact a patent'"'"'s skin.

24. The liquid removal system according to claim 21 wherein said sealing material is petroleum jelly.

25. A method of removing liquid comprising:

contacting a first liquid with an interface device, said interface device comprising a first zone and a second zone and having a porous membrane separating said first zone from said second zone, said second zone having a vacuum source connected thereto be means of a drain tube;

said porous membrane having been wetted with a second liquid prior to the contacting of the first liquid with the interface device whereby a vacuum is maintained in said second zone without permitting air from said first zone to pass through said porous membrane;

passing said first liquid into said first zone of said interface device;

contacting said porous membrane with said first liquid;

passing said first liquid through said porous membrane into said second zone, such that said first liquid is removed from said first zone;

said porous membrane retaining liquid therein after said first liquid passes through said porous membrane such that said porous membrane remains capable of maintaining a vacuum in said second zone, without permitting air to enter said second zone through said porous member.

26. A system for removing liquid comprising;

a) a liquid contacting means, said means having a first zone and a second zone and having a porous membrane between said first and second zones, said membrane being capable of maintaining a vacuum in said second zone without permitting air from said first zone to pass through said membrane when said membrane has been wetted with a first liquid;

b) a means for maintaining a vacuum in the second zone of said liquid contacting means so that upon a second liquid contacting said porous membrane said vacuum causes said second liquid to pass through said porous membrane and be removed from said first zone.

27. A system to claim 26 wherein said membrane is hydrophilic.

28. A system according to claim 27 wherein said membrane when wetted with said first liquid will support a suction pressure of about 5 to about 60 inches of water without permitting air to pass through said porous membrane.

29. A system according to claim 26 wherein said membrane has a pore size of about 5 to about 30 microns.

30. A system according to claim 26 wherein said porous membrane remains wetted with a liquid after said second liquid passes through said membrane such that said porous membrane remains capable of maintaining a vacuum in said second zone without permitting air to pass through said membrane.

31. A system according to claim 26 wherein the vacuum is maintained by a drain tube connected to said second zone having liquid therein, said tube having an opening for removing liquid positioned lower in height than said liquid contacting means during operation of said system.

32. A system according to claim 26 wherein a vacuum is maintained by a receptacle having first and second check valves, said first check valve being an inlet valve which permits liquid to enter said receptacle from said liquid contacting means but prevents liquid from returning to said liquid contacting means and said second check valve being an outlet value which permits liquid to flow from said receptacle but prevents air from entering said receptacle.

33. A system according to claim 32 wherein a vacuum is maintained by a pump.

34. A system according to claim 33 wherein said pump comprises a bellows.

35. A system according to claim 34 wherein said bellows is compressed by an arm connected to a motor.

36. A system according to claim 35 wherein said motor has a control means which permits the motor to operate only when liquid is introduced into the liquid contacting means and the vacuum in the bellow drops below a preselected level.

37. A system according to claim 26 wherein said means for maintaining a vacuum comprises a first tube connecting said liquid contacting means with a vacuum bottle and a second tube having a pressure transducer for sensing the vacuum across the membrane said vacuum being maintained by a pump wherein said pump is activated by the pressure transducer when there is a decrease in the vacuum below a preselected value and said pump is deactivated once the vacuum returns to said preselected value.

38. A system according to claim 37 further comprising a vacuum relief means in said second tube to prevent the vacuum from exceeding a preselected value.

39. A system according to claim 38 wherein said vacuum relief means is a spring loaded check valve.

40. A system according to claim 38 wherein said vacuum relief means is an electronically operated solenoid valve.

41. A system according to claim 37 further comprising a means for preventing a positive pressure in said vacuum bottle said means being in line between said vacuum bottle and said pump.

42. A system according to claim 26 wherein said means for maintaining a vacuum comprises a means for connecting said liquid contacting means with a pump, a means for connecting said liquid contacting means with vacuum relief means, said pump being connected to a collection means for holding the removed liquid, said vacuum relief means being connected to said collection means such that said vacuum relief means prevents the vacuum in the collection means from exceeding a predetermined level.

43. A system according to claim 42 wherein said pump is a hand pump which when pumped evacuates air from said connecting means into said collection means and maintains a vacuum such that when liquid enters said connecting means said liquid is caused to pass through said pump into said collection means.

44. A system according to claim 42 wherein said vacuum relief means is a spring loaded check valve.

45. A system according to claim 42 wherein said vacuum relief means is an electronically operated solenoid valve.

46. A system according to claim 26 wherein said means for maintaining a vacuum comprises a pump connected to said liquid contacting means, a pressure transducer to monitor the vacuum between the liquid contacting means and said pump, said pump being further connected to a collection means whereby a decrease in pressure is sensed by said pressure transducer which causes said pump to activate thereby increasing the vacuum.

47. A system according to claim 46 wherein said pump is a peristaltic pump.

48. A system according to claim 46 wherein said pump has a disposable pumphead.
