Tool holder with patterned hard shim forming indented seat and method
First Claim
1. A cutting tool assembly comprising:
- (a) a tool holder formed with an insert retaining pocket initially having a substantially smooth, planar pocket base wall;
(b) a cutting insert of a substantially prismatic shape having an upper surface, a lower surface and side relief flank surfaces and a cutting corner defined therebetween; and
(c) a shim generally corresponding in shape and size to said cutting insert and being of a material substantially harder than said tool holder, said shim having an upper supporting surface which supports said insert lower surface, and a lower bearing surface which bears against said pocket base wall, whereinsaid lower bearing surface is formed with a pattern of protrusions;
said insert and said shim are releasably mounted in said pocket such that an operative cutting corner is disposed atop said pattern of protrusions, andsaid pattern of protrusions is adapted to penetrate said substantially smooth, planar pocket base wall and form an indented seating surface in at least a region supporting said operative cutting corner, upon application of a downward force on said insert.

Abstract
A cutting tool assembly comprising a tool holder formed with an insert retaining pocket having a pocket base wall and in which is releasably mounted a cutting insert and a shim. The cutting insert is of a substantially prismatic shape having an upper surface, a lower surface and side relief flank surfaces and at least one cutting corner defined therebetween and presenting at least one cutting edge formed by the intersection of the upper surface and a corresponding number of the side relief surfaces adjacent thereto. The shim generally correspondes in shape and size to the cutting insert, the insert and the shim being releasably mounted in the pocket by clamping means so that an upper supporting surface of the shim supports the lower surface of the cutting insert and a lower bearing surface of the shim bears against the pocket base wall, at least a portion of the shim'"'"'s lower bearing surface being formed, substantially in the region supporting the cutting corner, with a pattern of protrusions adapted to indent the pocket base wall.

7. A method for seating a cutting insert in a tool holder, said cutting insert having a substantially prismatic shape with an upper surface, a lower surface, side relief flank surfaces and a cutting corner defined therebetween, said method comprising the steps of:
-
(a) providing the tool holder with a substantially smooth, planar pocket base wall; (b) disposing a shim generally corresponding in shape and size to said cutting insert atop said pocket base wall, said shim being of a material substantially harder than said tool holder and having an upper supporting surface and a lower bearing surface, said lower beating surface bearing against said pocket wall and being formed with a pattern of protrusions; (c) clamping the cutting insert atop the shim'"'"'s upper supporting surface such that an operative cutting corner of said insert is disposed above said pattern of protrusions; and (d) applying a downward force on said cutting insert such that the protrusions penetrate the substantially smooth, planar pocket base wall and form an indented seating surface in at least a region supporting said operative cutting corner. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9)
