Infusion pump with different operating modes
First Claim
1. An infusion apparatus for infusing liquid into a patient, said infusion apparatus being compatible with a plurality of different types of cassettes which are adapted to be insertable into and removable from said infusion apparatus, said infusion apparatus comprising:
- a housing adapted to receive a first type of cassette and a second type of cassette;
a pump disposed in said housing and adapted to pump liquid through a conduit;
a cassette sensor disposed in said housing, said cassette sensor being capable of determining whether said first type of cassette is inserted into said housing or said second type of cassette is inserted into said housing;
control means for controlling the operation of said pump, said control means including means for causing a first course of control action to be taken when said first type of cassette is inserted into said housing and a second course of control action to be taken when said second type of cassette is inserted into said housing, said means for causing a first course of control action to be taken comprising;
means for comparing a programmed infusion rate with a predetermined infusion rate; and
means for preventing said pump from pumping liquid through said conduit if said programmed infusion rate exceeds said predetermined infusion rate.

Abstract
An infusion method and apparatus for infusing liquid into a patient, the infusion apparatus being compatible with a plurality of different types of cassettes which are adapted to be insertable into and removable from the infusion apparatus. The infusion apparatus has a housing adapted to receive a first type of cassette and a second type of cassette, a pump disposed in the housing and adapted to pump liquid through a conduit, and a cassette sensor disposed in the housing, the cassette sensor being capable of determining whether the first type of cassette is inserted into the housing or the second type of cassette is inserted into the housing. The infusion apparatus includes control means for controlling the operation of the pump which causes a first course of control action to be taken when the first type of cassette is inserted into the housing and a second course of control action to be taken when the second type of cassette is inserted into the housing. The control means may cause the pump to be operated in a first operating mode when the first type of cassette is inserted into the housing and in a second operating mode when the second type of cassette is inserted into the housing. The control means may include means for comparing a programmed infusion rate with a predetermined infusion rate, and means for preventing the pump from pumping liquid through the conduit if the programmed infusion rate exceeds the predetermined infusion rate.

11. A method of operating an infusion apparatus for infusing liquid into a patient, said infusion apparatus being compatible with a plurality of different types of cassettes which are adapted to be insertable into and removable from said infusion apparatus, said method comprising the steps of:
-
(a) inserting into said infusion apparatus a cassette of a first type or a second type; (b) generating an electrical signal indicative of the type of cassette that was inserted into said infusion apparatus in said step (a); (c) automatically determining the type of cassette that was inserted into said infusion apparatus in said step (a) based upon said electrical signal generated during said step (b); (d) if said first type of cassette was inserted into said infusion apparatus during said step (a) as determined in said step (c), operating said infusion apparatus in accordance with a first course of action, said first course of action comprising the steps of; (d1) comparing a programmed infusion rate with a predetermined infusion rate; and (d2) preventing said infusion apparatus from infusing said liquid into said patient if said programmed infusion rate exceeds said predetermined infusion rate as determined in said step (d1); and (e) if said second type of cassette was inserted into said infusion apparatus during said step (a) as determined in said step (c), operating said infusion apparatus in accordance with a second course of action different than said first course of action. - View Dependent Claims (12, 13, 14)
