Abstract

A common transceiver circuit for use as either a modulator or demodulator and that is implemented through a shared resource approach. This approach is particularly, though not exclusively, suited for vestigial sideband (VSB) signals. Specifically, a VSB transceiver circuit (700), through strategically located multiplexing stages, physically re-uses a complex vestigial Nyquist filter (610), a complex mixer (620) and an equalizer (785) during demodulation and modulation. The VSB transceiver also selects a particular configuration of a common complex Hilbert transform circuit (720) for use during either demodulation or modulation. In addition, the same equalizer selectively provides both channel equalization, during de-modulation, and (sin x)/x compensation, during modulation, through use of differing corresponding sets of tap coefficients.

Claims

1. Apparatus for a vestigial sideband (VSB) demodulator/modulator comprising:

a complex multi-function filter, commonly used during VSB modulation and VSB demodulation and responsive to both an input signal and a mode signal, to provide an output filtered signal, wherein the multi-function filter imparts a different pre-defined function to the input signal corresponding to a current state of the mode signal;

the mode signal being either in a pre-defined first or second state signifying VSB demodulation or VSB modulation, respectively;

wherein the filter, during VSB demodulation and in response to the first state of the mode signal, equalizes the input signal such that the output filtered signal is an equalized version of the input signal, and the filter, during VSB modulation and in response to the second state of the mode signal, imparts a pre-defined frequency response characteristic to the input signal such that the output filtered signal is a frequency compensated version of the input signal; and

a first multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for selectively routing as the input signal to the complex multi-function filter either, during VSB demodulation, a complex Nyquist filtered VSB modulated signal or, during VSB modulation, Hilbert transformed modulated symbols.

2. The apparatus in claim 1 further comprising:

a Hilbert transform circuit, commonly used during demodulation and modulation and connected to the mode signal, for providing during VSB demodulation and in response to the first state of the mode signal, a complex Hilbert transformed signal and, during VSB modulation and in response to the second state of the mode signal, in-phase Hilbert transformed modulated symbols as the Hilbert transformed modulated symbols applied to the first multiplexor; and

a second multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for providing as an input signal to the Hilbert transform circuit, either, during VSB demodulation, an incoming VSB modulated signal or, during VSB modulation, a stream of complex modulated symbols.

3. The apparatus in claim 2 further comprising:

a complex Nyquist filter, commonly used during modulation and demodulation, for generating, during VSB demodulation, the complex Nyquist filtered VSB modulated signal applied to the first multiplexor and, during VSB modulation, a stream of complex Nyquist filtered symbols; and

a third multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for providing as an input signal to the complex Nyquist filter, either, during VSB demodulation, a stream of complex baseband VSB samples or, during VSB modulation, incoming in-phase symbols applied as input symbols to said apparatus.

4. The apparatus in claim 3 further comprising:

a complex mixer, having first and second complex inputs and being commonly used during modulation and demodulation, for providing, during VSB demodulation, the complex baseband VSB samples applied to the third multiplexor and, during VSB modulation, a stream of mixed complex samples;

a carrier recovery circuit, having an output connected to the first input of the complex mixer and being responsive to the mode signal, for providing, during VSB modulation, a complex carrier frequency signal and, during VSB demodulation, a complex carrier frequency phase-locked to a decimated signal responsive to the complex Hilbert transformed signal; and

a fourth multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for providing, as the second input to the complex mixer, during VSB demodulation, the decimated signal responsive to the complex Hilbert transformed signal, or, during VSB modulation, the stream of complex Nyquist filtered symbols produced by the complex Nyquist filter.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 further comprising:

an output circuit, responsive to the mode signal and the output filtered signal, for generating as an output from the apparatus, during VSB demodulation, in-phase decisions based on the equalized version of the input signal provided by the multi-function filter, and, during VSB modulation, the frequency compensated version of the input signal provided by the multi-function filter as a modulated VSB signal.

6. The apparatus in claim 5 wherein the predefined response characteristic imparted by the multi-function filter during VSB modulation is a predefined high pass filter function.

7. The apparatus in claim 6 wherein the predefined high pass filter function is a (sin x)/x compensation function.

8. The apparatus in claim 5 wherein the output circuit comprises:

a slicing circuit, responsive during demodulation to an in-phase portion of the filtered output signal, for producing the output symbol decisions; and

a fifth multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for routing to an output lead of the apparatus either, during VSB demodulation, the in-phase decisions or, during VSB modulation, the frequency compensated version of the input signal provided by the multi-function filter.

9. The apparatus in claim 5 wherein, during VSB demodulation, the multi-function filter is adaptive with adaptation being controlled by an error signal, and the output circuit comprises a slicing circuit with the error signal being generated by the slicing circuit.

10. The apparatus in claim 5 further comprising a down-sampling circuit that reduces the sampling rate of the complex Hilbert transformed signal by half so as to form the decimated signal.

11. The apparatus in claim 5 further comprising an up-sampling circuit for upsampling the stream of mixed complex samples by two so as to form the complex modulated samples applied to the second multiplexer.

12. The apparatus in claim 11 wherein the up-sampling circuit inserts a zero value between each pair of adjacent input values applied to an input of the up-sampler.

The apparatus in claim 5 wherein the Hilbert transform circuit has two configurations and the mode signal selects a corresponding configuration of the Hilbert transform circuit to use so as to produce, during VSB demodulation, a complex output for the incoming VSB modulating samples applied as a real input to the Hilbert transform circuit or, during VSB modulation, an in-phase output for the complex modulated symbols applied as a complex input to the Hilbert transform circuit.

14. The apparatus in claim 13 wherein the Hilbert transform circuit further comprises:

first and second Hilbert filters for filtering in-phase and imaginary components, respectively, so as to provide filtered in-phase and imaginary components, with in-phase signal components applied as input to the Hilbert transform circuit being applied as an input to the first filter and the filtered imaginary components produced by the second filter being routed to an imaginary signal component output of the Hilbert transform circuit;

an input multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for routing as the imaginary components as input to the second filter, either, during VSB demodulation, the in-phase signal components applied as input to the first filter, or, during VSB modulation, imaginary signal components applied as input to the Hilbert transform circuit;

a combiner for subtractively combining the filtered in-phase and imaginary filtered components so as to produce a resulting difference signal; and

an output multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for routing to an in-phase output of the Hilbert transform circuit either, during VSB demodulation, the filtered in-phase components, or, during VSB modulation, the resulting difference signal.

15. The apparatus in claim 5 further comprising a timing recovery circuit responsive, during VSB demodulation, to the filtered output signal for producing an output timing signal for use in synthesizing a sample clock synchronized to a stream of symbols in the incoming VSB modulated signal.

16. Apparatus for a repeater for vestigial sideband (VSB) digital signals comprising:

first and second transceiver circuits, wherein the first transceiver circuit demodulates an incoming VSB modulated signal so as to produce a stream of digital output symbol decisions and the second transceiver circuit modulates said decisions so as to produce an output VSB modulated signal, each of said first and second transceivers comprising;

a complex multi-function filter, commonly used during VSB modulation and VSB demodulation and responsive to both an input signal and a mode signal, to provide an output filtered signal, wherein the multi-function filter imparts a different pre-defined function to the input signal corresponding to a current state of the mode signal;

the mode signal being either in a pre-defined first or second state signifying VSB demodulation or VSB modulation, respectively;

wherein the filter, during VSB demodulation and in response to the first state of the mode signal, equalizes the input signal such that the output filtered signal is an equalized version of the input signal, and the filter, during VSB modulation and in response to the second state of the mode signal, imparts a pre-defined frequency response characteristic to the input signal such that the output filtered signal is a frequency compensated version of the input signal; and

a first multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for selectively routing as the input signal to the complex multi-function filter either, during VSB demodulation, a complex Nyquist filtered VSB modulated signal or, during VSB modulation, Hilbert transformed modulated symbols.

17. The apparatus in claim 16 wherein each of the transceiver circuits further comprises:

a Hilbert transform circuit, commonly used during demodulation and modulation and connected to the mode signal, for providing during VSB demodulation and in response to the first state of the mode signal, a complex Hilbert transformed signal and, during VSB modulation and in response to the second state of the mode signal, in-phase Hilbert transformed modulated symbols as the Hilbert transformed modulated symbols applied to the first multiplexor; and

a second multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for providing as an input signal to the Hilbert transform circuit, either, during VSB demodulation, an incoming VSB modulated signal or, during VSB modulation, a stream of complex modulated symbols.

18. The apparatus in claim 17 wherein each of the transceiver circuits further comprises:

a complex Nyquist filter, commonly used during modulation and demodulation, for generating, during VSB demodulation, the complex Nyquist filtered VSB modulated signal applied to the first multiplexor and, during VSB modulation, a stream of complex Nyquist filtered symbols; and

a third multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for providing as an input signal to the complex Nyquist filter, either, during VSB demodulation, a stream of complex baseband VSB samples or, during VSB modulation, incoming in-phase symbols applied as input symbols to said apparatus.

19. The apparatus in claim 18 wherein each of the transceiver circuits further comprises:

a complex mixer, having first and second complex inputs and being commonly used during modulation and demodulation, for providing, during VSB demodulation, the complex baseband VSB samples applied to the third multiplexor and, during VSB modulation, a stream of mixed complex samples;

a carrier recovery circuit, having an output connected to the first input of the complex mixer and being responsive to the mode signal, for providing, during VSB modulation, a complex carrier frequency signal and, during VSB demodulation, a complex carrier frequency phase-locked to a decimated signal responsive to the complex Hilbert transformed signal; and

a fourth multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for providing, as the second input to the complex mixer, during VSB demodulation, the decimated signal responsive to the complex Hilbert transformed signal, or, during VSB modulation, the stream of complex Nyquist filtered symbols produced by the complex Nyquist filter.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein each of the transceiver circuits further comprises:

an output circuit, responsive to the mode signal and the output filtered signal, for generating as an output from the apparatus, during VSB demodulation, in-phase decisions based on the equalized version of the input signal provided by the multi-function filter, and, during VSB modulation, the frequency compensated version of the input signal provided by the multi-function filter as a modulated VSB signal.

21. The apparatus in claim 20 wherein the predefined response characteristic imparted by the multi-function filter during VSB modulation is a predefined high pass filter function.

22. The apparatus in claim 21 wherein the predefined high pass filter function is a (sin x)/x compensation function.

23. The apparatus in claim 20 wherein the output circuit comprises:

a slicing circuit, responsive during demodulation to an in-phase portion of the filtered output signal, for producing the output symbol decisions; and

a fifth multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for routing to an output lead of the apparatus either, during VSB demodulation, the in-phase decisions or, during VSB modulation, the frequency compensated version of the input signal provided by the multi-function filter.

24. The apparatus in claim 20 wherein, during VSB demodulation, the multi-function filter is adaptive with adaptation being controlled by an error signal, and the output circuit comprises a slicing circuit with the error signal being generated by the slicing circuit.

25. The apparatus in claim 20 wherein each of the transceiver circuits further comprises a down-sampling circuit that reduces the sampling rate of the complex Hilbert transformed signal by half so as to form the decimated signal.

26. The apparatus in claim 20 wherein each of the transceiver circuits further comprises an up-sampling circuit for upsampling the stream of mixed complex samples by two so as to form the complex modulated samples applied to the second multiplexer.

27. The apparatus in claim 26 wherein the up-sampling circuit inserts a zero value between each pair of adjacent input values applied to an input of the up-sampler.

28. The apparatus in claim 20 wherein the Hilbert transform circuit has two configurations and the mode signal selects a corresponding configuration of the Hilbert transform circuit to use so as to produce, during VSB demodulation, a complex output for the incoming VSB modulating samples applied as a real input to the Hilbert transform circuit or, during VSB modulation, an in-phase output for the complex modulated symbols applied as a complex input to the Hilbert transform circuit.

29. The apparatus in claim 28 wherein the Hilbert transform circuit further comprises:

first and second Hilbert filters for filtering in-phase and imaginary components, respectively, so as to provide filtered in-phase and imaginary components, with in-phase signal components applied as input to the Hilbert transform circuit being applied as an input to the first filter and the filtered imaginary components produced by the second filter being routed to an imaginary signal component output of the Hilbert transform circuit;

an input multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for routing as the imaginary components as input to the second filter, either, during VSB demodulation, the in-phase signal components applied as input to the first filter, or, during VSB modulation, imaginary signal components applied as input to the Hilbert transform circuit;

a combiner for subtractively combining the filtered in-phase and imaginary filtered components so as to produce a resulting difference signal; and

an output multiplexor, responsive to the mode signal, for routing to an in-phase output of the Hilbert transform circuit either, during VSB demodulation, the filtered in-phase components, or, during VSB modulation, the resulting difference signal.

30. The apparatus in claim 20 wherein each of the transceiver circuits further comprises a timing recovery circuit responsive, during VSB demodulation, to the filtered output signal for producing an output timing signal for use in synthesizing a sample clock synchronized to a stream of symbols in the incoming VSB modulated signal.
