A method for the safe and effective collection, storage and transfusion of blood comprising the steps of,collecting blood from a donor into a polymer-iodine coated container to receive said blood,storing said collected blood in a polymer-iodine coated storage container prior to transfusion, and thentransfusing into a recipient the blood from a polymer-iodine coated transfusion container, wherein the iodine released from each polymer-iodine coated container aids in inactivating toxic microorganisms in said blood.
