1. A method for operating a radio subscriber unit having an ability to communicate over a plurality of communication channels, said method comprising the steps of:

  • communicating with a base station over a first one of said channels, wherein during the communicating step, said subscriber unit receives a digital communication signal;

    detecting a likelihood of interference at said subscriber unit during said communicating step; and

    transmitting, in response to said detecting step, a message to said base station, said message requesting a second one of said channels for use in communicating with said base station;

    wherein the detecting step comprises the steps of;

    measuring a signal strength of said received digital communication signal; and

    measuring a received signal quality of said digital communication signal, said received signal quality based on a bit error rate,and the method includes the step of performing the transmitting step when the received signal quality is less than an expected signal quality corresponding with said measured signal strength.
