Combination stopper-shield closure
First Claim
1. A closure for sealing an open end of a body fluid collection tube configured to be received in a needle holder comprised of a cylindrical wall having a needle disposed within the needle holder at a distal end, said closure comprising:
- a shield having a wall and an outer skirt having a plurality of flexible tabs extending therefrom;
a sealing element for sealing the open end of the tube having an upper flange that is received in said shield and includes a top surface, wherein said top surface of said sealing element in conjunction with said wall of said shield form a well having a central aperture; and
a gas-barrier member bonded to said closure to improve vacuum retention within the tube and protect said well from contamination,wherein said closure is firmly retained in the needle holder during body fluid collection by interaction between said flexible tabs on said shield and the cylindrical wall of the needle holder.

Abstract
A combination stopper and shield closure for sealing the open end of an evacuated body fluid collection tube to retain the vacuum therein. The stopper is retained within a central aperture in the shield by an upper and lower flange, the upper flange having a convex surface for directing residue body fluid away from the center of the flange to reduce contamination. The closure also includes a gas-barrier bonded to the stopper and/or shield to increase the vacuum seal and cam followers extending from the bottom of the shield to interact with cams on the outer surface of the tube to facilitate closure twist-off. In addition, the closure includes flexible tabs around the bottom of the shield to prevent the tube/closure assembly from being pushed out of a needle holder during body fluid collection.

4. A closure for sealing an open end of a body fluid collection tube configured to be received in a needle holder comprised of a cylindrical wall having a needle disposed within the needle holder at a distal end, said closure comprising:
-
a shield having a wall and an outer skirt having a plurality of flexible tabs extending therefrom; and a sealing element for sealing the open end of the tube having an upper flange that is received in said shield and includes a top surface, wherein said top surface of said sealing element in conjunction with said wall of said shield form a well having a central aperture, wherein said closure is firmly retained in the needle holder during body fluid collection by interaction between said flexible tabs on said shield and the cylindrical wall of the needle holder, wherein said shield further comprises a plurality of projections extending from an interior surface of said outer skirt, said projections on said outer skirt positioned to mate with a locking ring on an outer wall of the tube to securely lock said closure onto the tube and retain the vacuum within the tube, wherein said shield further comprises a plurality of cam followers around said outer skirt that interact with a plurality of cams on the outer wall of the tube to facilitate unlocking said projections and twisting off said closure from the tube. - View Dependent Claims (5)
