First Claim
1. A method of making a finishing panel by bonding first and second automotive trim coverstock segments having elongated edges to respective first and second rigid substrate components each having a mating flange defining one end thereof to form first and second coverstock substrate subassemblies and subsequently joining the respective coverstock-substrate subassemblies together along their respective mating flanges such that a finishing panel is formed with the coverstock segments meeting along a finished joint line, said method comprising the steps of:
- mating and joining said elongated edges of the coverstock segments together to form a rough seam;
supporting the first and second rigid substrate components on respective first and second movable mold components each having a clamping surface with the substrate mating flanges engaging respective clamping surfaces of the mold components;
locating the moveable mold components in a spaced-apart open position;
bonding the joined coverstock segments to upper surfaces of the substrate components with a portion of the joined coverstock segments spanning the space between the open mold components and the rigid substrate component supported thereon with the rough seam lying along the space approximately midway between the mold component clamping surfaces;
applying pressure along the rough seam to fold the spanning coverstock portion and the rough seam inwardly between the spaced-apart mold component clamping surfaces; and
moving the mold components to a clamped position with the clamping surfaces causing the substrate mating flanges to sandwich the folded coverstock portion therebetween to thereby form a finished joint line between the coverstock segments and hiding the rough seam, andconnecting the substrate mating flanges and the sandwiched infolded coverstock portion together to complete the panel.

Abstract
An automotive trim panel is made by using an apparatus and method that bond together two trim coverstock segments having different colors, gauges or textures and two rigid substrate components into a single trim panel with the two coverstock segments meeting along a finished joint line. The method includes joining the coverstock segments together to form a rough seam, supporting the substrate components on two spaced-apart movable mold components with each substrate component having a mating flange that extends into the space between the mold components, applying an adhesive layer to the substrate upper surfaces, heating the joined coverstock segments and vacuum or positive air pressure-forming them across the substrate upper surfaces with the rough seam lying midway between the spaced-apart mold components. Pressure is then applied along the rough seam to infold the coverstock between the mold components while moving the mold components toward a clamped position that sandwiches the infolded coverstock portion between the substrate mating flanges and fastens them together with a pre-mounted fastener. The method forms a finished styling line between the dissimilar coverstock segments and hides the rough seam.

6. A method of making a trim panel from a plurality of separate sheets of plastics material providing first and second coverstock segments each having an elongated edge and from at least two separate substrate components each having a mating flange defining one end thereof and which respectively support said first and second coverstock segments comprising the steps of:
-
a. joining the first and second coverstock segments along adjacent edges thereof to form a rough seam portion, b. positioning the substrate components adjacent one another on separate supports located in a spaced apart and open position so that there is an open space between the mating flanges thereof, c. placing the joined coverstock segments on the spaced apart substrate components so that the rough seam portion lies in the space between the mating flanges of the substrate components, d. moving the supports and the substrate components positioned thereon from said spaced apart and open position toward a closed position while infolding the rough seam portion of the coverstock segments between and to a terminal position below the flanges of the substrate components as they are being moved toward the closed position, e. continuing the movement of the supports and the substrate components to the closed position whereby the outer surfaces of said coverstock segments disposed over the flanges of the substrate components contact one another and form a pinched junction and resultantly a finishing styling line between the first and second coverstock segments, f. joining said substrate components and the coverstock segments to one another with fasteners that connect the flanges of the substrate component to one another to make the trim panel, and g. removing the trim panel from said supports. - View Dependent Claims (7)
