Control system for air quality and temperature conditioning unit with high capacity filter bypass
First Claim
1. A method for controlling an air conditioning unit that receives outside and return air to form mixed air and discharges supply air having a predetermined minimum quality and maximum enthalpy, said method comprising the steps of:
- receiving adjustable amounts of outside and return air;
determining a quality of said outside and return air; and
maintaining a quality of said supply air, without passing said supply air through a filter, by adding a necessary amount of outside air to said supply air to dilute contaminants therein to an acceptable level, in response to a determination in said determining step that said quality of said outside air is above said predetermined minimum quality.

Abstract
An air conditioning unit is provided with a high capacity filtration system for removing pollutants from supply air, typically return air which has been recirculated from the conditioned area. A filter bypass passage and suitable flow control devices are provided so that supply air, typically fresh outdoor air, may be routed around the filtration system when minimal or no filtration is required. An air quality detector samples the air quality and positions the flow control devices to effect the most cost efficient operation of the air handling unit under the given operating conditions.

6. An air conditioning control system for controlling an air conditioning unit, comprising:
-
a housing having outside and return air inlets which receive outside and return air, respectively, that combine within an intake chamber to form mixed air, said housing including a discharge opening to pass said mixed air therefrom; sensor means for detecting a quality of said outside and return air; comparitor means for comparing outside air quality with a predefined standard; and control means for changing an amount of said outside air and an amount of said return air admitted through said outside and return air inlets forming said mixed air, said control means increasing an amount of outside air admitted through said outside air inlet when said comparitor means determines that the outside air quality is above said standard. - View Dependent Claims (7)
