Abstract

The present invention provides a tube and cable restraint comprising: a strip of flexible material having a generally elongated rectangular loop-section adapted to form a loop about the tube with an attachment means near the first end of the loop-section adapted to secure (e.g., adhere) the strip to a surgical drape and a refastenable loop forming means adapted to secure (e.g., adhere) the second end of the loop-section to the first end thereby forming a loop around the tube or cable. In another embodiment, the restraint is adapted to secure a tubular drape around a projecting object such as a microscope eyepiece.

Claims

1. A surgical drape, comprising:

a sheet of drape fabric having a fenestration therethrough; and

at least one tube restraint attached to said drape fabric, comprising;

a strip of flexible material having a generally elongated loop-section with a first end and a second end for forming a loop about said tube intermediate the ends of said loop-section;

an attachment means at the first end of said loop-section for securing said strip to a surface;

a refastenable loop forming means for securing the ends of said loop-section together thereby forming a loop around said tube, wherein said refastenable loop forming means is an adhesive means selected from the group consisting;

thermoplastic adhesives, thermoset adhesives, pressure sensitive adhesives, and adhesive tapes;

and a finger tab at the second end of said loop-section for grasping between the fingers to facilitate peeling open said loop forming means, wherein the major surfaces of said finger tab are substantially free of adhesive.

2. A drape according to claim 1, wherein said strip of flexible material is selected from the group consisting of cloth, nonwoven fabric, foam and plastic sheet materials.

A drape according to claim 1, wherein said strip of flexible material comprises plastic sheet materials selected from the group consisting of acetate, azlon, rayon, triacetate, acrylic, aramid, nylon, poly(1-butene), polycarbonate, polyethylene, polyester, poly(3-methyl-1-butene), poly(1-pentene), polypropylene, polystyrene, polysulfone, polytetrafluoroethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(vinyl chloride), poly(vinylidine chloride), and poly(vinylidine fluoride).

4. A drape according to claim 1, wherein said strip of flexible material comprises plastic sheet materials selected from the group consisting of polyester and polyethylene and wherein said loop-section has a tensile strength of at least 5N/cm width.

5. A drape according to claim 3, wherein said loop-section comprises a first major surface that is substantially free of adhesive and is adapted to form a loop about said tube.

6. A drape according to claim 3, wherein said loop-section is at least 8 cm in length and between 1 and 5 cm wide.

7. A drape according to claim 1, wherein said attachment means is selected from the group consisting of:

a mechanical means such as metallic staples, metallic snaps, metallic rivets, plastic staples, plastic snaps, plastic rivets, and sewing with thread;

a sonic weld between said flexible material and said surface;

and an adhesive means such as thermoplastic adhesives, thermoset adhesives, pressure sensitive adhesives, and adhesive tapes.

8. A drape according to claim 3, wherein said attachment means comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive.

A drape according to claim 8, wherein said attachment means comprises an adhesive tape coated on one side with a pressure sensitive adhesive and wherein a portion of said adhesive tape is attached to said strip along the edge of one end of said strip and another portion of said adhesive tape is covered with a liner.

10. A drape according to claim 8, wherein said attachment means comprises an adhesive tape coated on two sides with a pressure sensitive adhesive and wherein one side of said double-sided adhesive tape is attached to said strip near one end of said strip.

11. A drape according to claim 1, wherein said surface is selected from the group consisting of a surgical drape and skin.

12. A drape according to claim 8, wherein said refastenable loop forming means comprises an adhesive tape coated on two sides with a pressure sensitive adhesive.

13. A drape according to claim 12, wherein the first side of said double-sided adhesive tape adheres more tenaciously to said strip than the second side.

14. A drape according to claim 8, wherein said flexible strip comprises at least one aperture there through, and wherein said refastenable loop forming means comprises an adhesive tape coated on one side with a pressure sensitive adhesive covering said aperture.

15. A drape according to claim 14, wherein said flexible strip comprises a plurality of apertures covered by said adhesive tape and wherein the total surface area of said apertures does not exceed 70% of the area of the adhesive tape.

A drape according to claim 1, wherein said attachment means comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive tape, said refastenable loop forming means comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive tape, and wherein said attachment means and said refastenable loop forming means are positioned near opposite ends of said strip.

A drape according to claim 1, wherein said attachment means comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive tape, said refastenable loop forming means comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive tape, and wherein said attachment means and said refastenable loop forming means are positioned near one end of said strip.

18. A drape according to claim 1, wherein said attachment means and said refastenable loop forming means comprise a single pressure sensitive adhesive tape.

19. A drape according to claim 1, wherein said refastenable loop forming means provides a T-Peel strength between 0.45N/cm and 1.45N/cm and a dynamic shear strength at least 10N/cm².

20. A drape according to claim 1, wherein said refastenable loop forming means comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive tape, and wherein said restraint further comprises a visual indicator adapted to indicated engagement of said loop forming means.

25. A drape according to claim 1, wherein said strip of flexible material comprises plastic sheet materials selected from the group consisting of naturally based organic polymers and synthetically prepared organic polymers.

26. A drape according to claim 1, wherein the exposed adhesive surface of said adhesive means lies away from the surface to which said restraint is attached when said tube restraint is attached to and lying flat against said surface.

27. A drape according to claim 8, wherein said restraint remains functional after being sterilized by a sterilization process selected from the group consisting of steam autoclave, gamma radiation, and ethylene oxide.

21. A surgical drape, comprising

a sheet of drape fabric having a tubular opening therethrough;

and

at least one restraint comprising a strip of flexible material having a generally elongated band-section adapted to form a band about said drape;

an attachment means at a first end of said band-section adapted to secure said strip to said drape; and

a refastenable band forming means adapted to secure the ends of said band-section together thereby forming a band around the tubular opening of said drape and an object contained therein.

A surgical drape according to claim 21, wherein said strip of flexible material comprises plastic sheet materials selected from the group consisting of acetate, azlon, rayon, triacetate, acrylic, aramid, nylon, poly(1-butene), polycarbonate, polyethylene, polyester, poly(3-methyl-1-butene), poly(1-pentene), polypropylene, polystyrene, polysulfone, polytetrafluoroethylene, poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(vinyl chloride), poly(vinylidine chloride), and poly(vinylidine fluoride).

23. A surgical drape according to claim 21, wherein said attachment means and said band forming means each comprise a pressure sensitive adhesive tape.

A surgical drape according to claim 23, further comprising a finger tab adapted to be grasped between the fingers to facilitate peeling open said band forming means, and wherein said refastenable band forming means provides a T-Peel strength between 0.45N/cm and 1.45N/cm and a dynamic shear strength at least 10N/cm².

28. A surgical drape according to claim 21, wherein said object is a microscope eyepiece.

29. A surgical drape, comprising:

a sheet of drape fabric; and

at least one restraint attached to the drape fabric, comprising;

a strip of flexible plastic material having a generally elongated loop-section with a first end and a second end for forming a loop about a tube, wherein the loop-section comprises a first major surface that is substantially free of adhesive and is adapted to form a loop about the tube;

an attachment means at the first end of the loop-section for securing the strip to a surface, wherein the attachment means comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive or tape;

a refastenable loop forming means for securing the ends of the loop-section together thereby forming a loop around the tube, wherein the refastenable loop forming means comprises a pressure sensitive adhesive or tape;

and a finger tab at the second end of said loop-section for grasping between the fingers to facilitate peeling open the loop forming means, wherein the major surfaces of the finger tab are substantially free of adhesive.

A surgical drape according to claim 29, wherein the attachment means comprises an adhesive tape coated on one side with a pressure sensitive adhesive and wherein a portion of the adhesive tape is attached to the strip along the edge of one end of the strip and another portion of the adhesive tape is covered with a liner.

31. A surgical drape according to claim 29, wherein the drape fabric has a fenestration therethrough, and the drape comprises a plurality of restraints attached thereto.

32. A surgical drape according to claim 29, wherein the loop-section of the restraint is at least 8 cm in length and between 1 and 5 cm wide.

33. A surgical drape according to claim 29, wherein the loop-section of the restraint is at least 10 cm in length and between 2 and 5 cm wide.
