Abstract

Endodiagnostic apparatus and methods by which infrared emissions within the range including 2 to 14 micrometers may be visualized in the form of encoded images to permit differential analysis. The endoseopic apparatus comprises a refractive objective lens for forming a real image of interior structure of interest, a relay system consisting solely of refracting elements for transferring the real image to an intermediate image plane conjugate to the objective image plane, and a refracting coupling lens for forming a final image of the intermediate image in a detector plane in which an IR detector sensitive in the range including 2 to 14 micrometers may be placed near the proximal end of the apparatus.

Claims

1. An endoscope system, having distal and proximal ends, for use in imaging infrared radiation from interior structures at wavelengths greater than 2 micrometers, said endoscope system comprising:

a refractive objective lens for forming a real image of radiation emitted from an interior structure of interest in an image plane;

at least one relay section consisting solely of refracting elements for transferring said real image to form an intermediate image in a conjugate plane located near said proximal end of said system;

an aperture stop for said endoscope system; and

a refracting coupling lens, located near said proximal end of said system, for forming a final image of said intermediate image in a detector plane located at the proximal end of said system, said refractive objective lens, relay section, and refracting coupling lens all being fabricated of materials that are transmissive at least at 2.0 micrometers and above.

2. The endoscope system of claim 1 wherein all of said refracting elements of said endoscope system are selected from the group consisting of germanium and silicon.

3. The endoscope system of claim 1 wherein said aperture stop is located within said relay system of said endoscope system, said aperture stop being composed of a low emissivity material.

4. The endoscope system of claim 3 wherein said aperture stop is composed of polished aluminum.

5. The endoscope system of claim 1 further comprising a warm stop located near the proximal end of said endoscope system, said warm stop having an aperture therethrough located at the conjugate of said aperture stop of said endoscope system.

6. The endoscope system of claim 5 wherein said warm stop includes a curved surface that is concave with respect to said detector plane.

7. The endoscope system of claim 6 wherein said warm stop is gold coated.

8. The endoscope system of claim 1 further including an infrared imaging detector, sensitive to IR radiation within the range including 2-14 micrometers, located proximate said detector plane.

9. The endoscope system of claim 8 wherein said infrared imaging detector is an array detector comprising indium antimonide.

10. The endoscope system of claim 1 further including an infrared video camera having a cooled infrared imaging detector located at said detector plane and a warm stop located forward of said imaging detector.

11. The endoscope system of claim 10 further including a coupling adapter for mechanically linking said infrared video camera to said coupling lens, said coupling adapter having portions serving as a warm stop for said endoscope system.

The endoscope system of claim 10 wherein said infrared video camera further includes a cold stop intermediate said cooled infrared imaging detector and said warm stop and wherein said cold stop is reimaged back onto itself by said warm stop, said cold stop further being positioned at the conjugate of said aperture stop of said endoscope system.

13. The endoscope system of claim 10 wherein said infrared video camera generates standard video signals wherein different levels of infrared radiation imaged by said endoscope system are encoded as different levels of a preselected gamut of colors.

14. The endoscope system of claim 13 wherein said colors comprise at least two different colors.

15. The endoscope system of claim 13 wherein said colors are monochromatic.
