1. A method of increasing the corrosion resistance of iron, steel and zinc-coated surfaces which comprises contacting the surface with an aqueous coating composition to provide a first coating on the surface, wherein the aqueous coating composition comprises:

  • (A) at least one cyclic hydroxy compound selected from the group consisting of cyclic polyhydroxy compounds and substituted phenols;

    (B) phosphate ions;

    (C) at least one organic oxidizer-accelerator; and

    (D) water.
