Abstract

A clamp for controlling uplift on a metal roof. The clamp includes a unitary mounting body having a slot extending therethrough. This slot may be positioned over/about a standing seam on a metal roof and be appropriately secured thereto, such as by the use of blunt-nosed screws which engage the seam material.

Claims

1. A method for controlling uplift on a roof with a plurality of clamps and securing members, the roof being formed from a substructure, a plurality of panels and seams defining an interconnection between adjacent said panels, and a plurality of clips extending between and interconnecting said substructure and said seams, each of said clamps comprising a longitudinally extending unitary body having an integrally formed longitudinal slot extending therethrough and at least a first hole extending through a side portion of said unitary body to said slot, each of said slots having first and second sidewalls, each of said securing members being elongated and having first and second ends, said method comprising the steps of:

positioning a first of said clamps on a first of said seams at a first location to receive a portion of said first seam within said slot of said first clamp, said first seam interconnecting first and second panels and being connected with said substructure by a first of said clips at said first location; and

inserting at least a first of said securing members into said first hole of said first clamp to securably engage said first seam within said slot of said first clamp with said first end of said first securing member.

2. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:

said slot comprises a generally U-shaped portion, said positioning said first clamp on said first seam step comprises contacting at least an upper portion of said first seam with at least one of said first and second sidewalls of said slot.

3. A method, as claimed in claim 2, wherein:

said slot further comprises an upper wall between said first and second sidewalls, said positioning said first clamp on said first seam step further comprises the step of abutting said upper wall of said slot with said upper portion of said first seam.

4. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:

said substructure comprises at least one purlin.

5. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:

said inserting said first securing member step comprises extending said first end of said first securing member through said first hole on said side portion into said slot to interface with an upper portion of said first seam.

6. A method, as claimed in claim 5, wherein:

said first clamp further comprises a second hole extending through a side portion of said first clamp to said slot, said method further comprising the step of;

inserting said first end of a second of said securing members through said second hole on said side portion into said slot to interface with said upper portion of said first seam.

7. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:

said first hole extends through said side portion to said first sidewall of said slot, said second sidewall comprising a cavity portion opposing and substantially aligned with said first hole, said inserting said first securing member into said first hole step comprises deforming an upper portion of said first seam into said cavity as said first end of said first securing member engages said upper portion of said first seam.

8. A method, as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the step of:

inserting a first part of at least one angle member within said slot between said first seam and one of said first and second sidewalls to position a second part of said angle member in an abutting relationship with a portion of said first seam.

9. A method, as claimed in claim 1, wherein:

said first clamp further comprises at least a first leg extending from a first side portion said unitary body of said first clamp.

10. A method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein:

said positioning step comprises abutting said first leg against a portion of said first seam.

11. A method, as claimed in claim 9, wherein:

said positioning step comprises abutting said first leg against a portion of said first panel.

12. A method, as claimed in claim 11, wherein:

said first clamp further comprises a second leg extending from a second side portion of said unitary body of said first clamp, said positioning step further comprises abutting said second leg against a portion of said second panel.

13. A method, as claimed in claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

positioning a second of said clamps on a second of said seams at a second location to receive a portion of said second seam within said slot of said second seam, said second seam being interconnected with said substructure by a second of said clips at said second location;

inserting a second of said securing members into said first hole of said second clamp to securably engage said second seam within said slot of said second clamp with said first end of said second securing member; and

interconnecting said first and second clamps by fastening first and second end portions of a first of a plurality of cross-members to said first and second clamps, respectively, said cross-members being elongated.

14. A method, as claimed in claim 13, wherein:

said first seam is laterally displaced from and adjacent to said second seam, said second seam interconnecting said second panel and a third of said panels.

15. A method, as claimed in claim 13, wherein:

said unitary body of each of said first and second clamps has a top surface, said fastening step comprises connecting said first and second end portions of said first cross-member to said top surface of said first and second clamps, respectively.

16. A method, as claimed in claim 13, wherein:

each of said first and second clamps includes a flange interconnected with said unitary bodies of said first and second clamps, said fastening step comprises connecting first and second ends of said first cross-member to said flanges of said first and second clamps, respectively.

17. A clamp assembly for controlling uplift on a roof, said roof comprising a plurality of panels which are interconnected to define a plurality of raised seams with a substantially planar base section disposed between adjacent raised seams, said clamp assembly comprising:

a unitary mounting body comprising first and second side surfaces, upper and lower surfaces and first and second ends;

a slot integrally formed in said unitary mounting body adapted for receiving at least part of one of said raised seams, wherein when said unitary mounting body is disposed on said one raised seam, a portion of said unitary mounting body disposed furthest from an upper surface of said one raised seam is disposed at a first distance below said upper surface of said one raised seam;

at least one leg extending from said unitary mounting body and comprising a substantially planar mounting surface which is a lowermost portion of said leg, wherein when said unitary mounting body is disposed on said one raised seam, said mounting surface is disposed at a second distance and below said upper surface of said one raised seam which is greater than said first distance, said mounting surface being generally parallel with said base section of said roof; and

a securing assembly comprising a first hole extending from one of said side surfaces through said unitary mounting body to interface with said slot and a first member positionable within said first hole and being extendable within said slot to secure at least said part of said one raised seam within said slot.

18. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said first and second side surfaces are generally longitudinally extending and laterally displaced, said upper and lower surfaces are generally longitudinally extending and vertically displaced, and said first and second ends are longitudinally displaced.

19. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said first member secures said part of said raised seam within said slot by engaging said part of said raised seam within said slot.

20. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said slot defines a portion of said lower surface and a portion of each of said first and second ends, said slot extending between said first and second ends and comprising first and second sidewalls.

21. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said leg extends from said lower surface of said unitary mounting body.

22. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said leg is integrally formed with said unitary mounting body.

23. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said leg is adapted for abutting against said seam.

24. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said leg is generally laterally extending relative to one of said first and second side surfaces of said unitary mounting body.

25. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said leg is adapted for abutting against a portion of said panel.

26. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, wherein:

said leg is disposed at an obtuse angle relative to one of said first and second side surfaces.

27. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 17, further comprising:

a cross-member having first and second ends, said cross-member being connectable to adjacent unitary mounting bodies attached to adjacent raised seams.

28. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 27, further comprising:

a flange portion extending from each of said legs of said adjacent unitary mounting bodies, said cross-member being connectable to said flange portions of said legs extending from said adjacent unitary mounting bodies, said mounting surfaces of said legs comprising said flange portions.

29. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 28, wherein:

said flange portion is disposed at an obtuse angle relative to said leg.

30. A clamp assembly, as claimed in claim 28, wherein:

said flange portion is disposed substantially 90°

relative to said leg.

31. A method for controlling uplift on a roof with a plurality of clamps and securing members, the roof being formed from a substructure, a plurality of panels and seams defining an interconnection between adjacent said panels, and a plurality of clips extending between and interconnecting said substructure and said seams, each of said clamps comprising a longitudinally extending unitary body having an integrally formed longitudinal slot extending therethrough and at least a first hole extending through a side portion of said unitary body to said slot, each of said slots having first and second sidewalls, each of said securing members being elongated and having first and second ends, said method comprising the steps of:

positioning a first of said clamps on a first of said seams at a first location to receive a portion of said first seam within said slot of said first clamp, said first seam interconnecting first and second panels and being connected with said substructure by a first of said clips at said first location;

inserting a first part of at least one angle member within said slot between said first seam and one of said first and second sidewalls to position a second part of said angle member in an abutting relationship with a portion of said first seam; and

inserting at least a first of said securing members into said first hole of said first clamp to securably engage said first seam within said slot of said first clamp with said first end of said first securing member.

32. A clamp assembly for controlling uplift on a roof, said clamp assembly being attachable to a raised seam interconnecting panels on a roof and comprising:

a unitary mounting body comprising first and second side surfaces, upper and lower surfaces and first and second ends;

a slot integrally formed in said unitary mounting body adapted for receiving at least part of said raised seam;

at least one leg for contacting at least one of said raised seam and said panel, said leg extending from said unitary mounting body;

a securing assembly comprising a first hole extending from one of said side surfaces through said unitary mounting body to interface with said slot and a first member positionable within said first hole and being extendable within said slot to secure at least said part of said raised seam within said slot;

a cross-member having first and second ends, said cross-member being connectable to adjacent unitary mounting bodies attached to adjacent raised seams; and

a flange portion extending from each of said legs of said adjacent unitary mounting bodies, said cross-member being connectable to said flange portions of said legs extending from said adjacent unitary mounting bodies, wherein said flange portion is disposed substantially 90°

relative to said leg.

33. A clamp assembly for controlling uplift on a roof, said clamp assembly being attachable to a raised seam interconnecting adjacent panels on a roof, said clamp assembly comprising:

a unitary mounting body comprising first and second side surfaces, upper and lower surfaces and first and second ends;

a slot integrally formed in said unitary mounting body and adapted for receiving at least part of one said raised seam;

an insert member separate from said unitary mounting body, wherein a first part of said insert member is in abutting relation with a portion of said one said raised seam; and

a securing assembly comprising a first hole extending from one of said side surfaces of said unitary mounting body through said unitary mounting body to interface with said slot and a first member positionable within said first hole and being extendable within said slot to secure at least said part of said one said raised seam within said slot, wherein said insert member further comprises a second part which is adapted to be disposed within said slot between said one said raised seam and said insert member.
