Tire pressure monitoring system utilizing a pressure activated transducer and sensor
First Claim
1. A wireless monitoring system for indicating the occurrence of a predefined condition with a transducer to which wires and other physical connections cannot be easily made, the monitoring system comprising:
- transducer means for sensing an occurrence of a predefined condition, said transducer means comprising (a) a pressure chamber coupled to a source of pressure to be monitored, (b) a piston slidingly engaged in said pressure chamber and operable to move within said pressure chamber in response to increasing pressure from said source, (c) a rod having a first end coupled to one side of said piston, said rod sealingly engaged with said pressure chamber and operable to extend into and out of said pressure chamber, and (d) biasing means coupled to a second end of said rod and operable to extend said rod into said pressure chamber when a biasing force of said biasing means is greater than a force of said piston created by said pressure from said source of pressure;
means for selectively producing a magnetic field coupled to said transducer and operable to emit a magnetic field when said transducer is in a first state and further operable to not emit a magnetic field when said transducer is in a second state; and
means for sensing a magnetic field positioned so as to be in at least occasional proximity to said means for selectively producing a magnetic field, said means for sensing a magnetic field producing an output only when said magnetic field is present.

Abstract
A wireless tire pressure monitoring system is disclosed to warn a driver of a vehicle of low pressure in a vehicle tire. The monitoring system includes a transducer to which wires or other physical connections cannot be easily made. The transducer is attached to a wheel rim and a magnetic field can be selectively produced by elements of the transducer in response to changes in tire pressure. A sensor is mounted for sensing the magnetic field with the sensor producing an output that can be coupled with a monitor in the vehicle cab.

8. A tire pressure monitoring system for warning a driver of a vehicle when pressure in a tire falls below a predetermined pressure level, comprising:
-
a pressure chamber having a pneumatic inlet; means for mechanically securing said pressure chamber to an inside rim of a wheel carrying said tire and mounted to an axle of said vehicle, said means for mechanically securing including air passage means for communicating pneumatic pressure from a stem of said tire to said pneumatic inlet; a piston slidingly engaged in said pressure and operable to move within said pressure chamber in response to an increase of said pneumatic pressure; a rod having a first end coupled to one side of said piston, said rod sealingly engaged with said pressure chamber and operable to extend into and out of said pressure chamber; biasing means coupled to a second end of said rod and operable to extend said rod into said pressure chamber when a biasing force of said biasing means is greater than a force on said piston created by said pneumatic pressure; a permanent magnet disposed in proximity to said pressure chamber;
said magnet producing a magnetic field;a Hall effect sensor mounted on said axle and operable to sense said magnetic field and produce an output when said permanent magnet is in substantially close proximity thereto; magnetic shield means coupled to said rod and operable to selectively deflect said magnetic field away from said Hall effect sensor when said pneumatic pressure is below said predetermined pressure and to leave said magnetic field substantially unaffected when said pneumatic pressure is above said predetermined pressure; and indicator means operable to alert said driver based upon said output.
