1. A method of flexibly managing logical links between document components within a presentation data stream comprising a continuous ordered stream of uniquely identified data objects and associated elements, said method comprising the steps of:

  • defining a link logical element structured field within said presentation data stream;

    specifying within said link logical element structured field one of the following components as a source of origination for a selected logical link;

    a document;

    a page group;

    a page;

    an overlay;

    a process element;

    a rectangular area;

    a data object;

    or a non-native data object;

    specifying within said link logical element structured field a target for said selected logical link; and

    specifying within said link logical element structured field a particular purpose for said selected logical link among a plurality of purposes wherein said selected logical link may be selectively processed or ignored by a receiver of said presentation data stream.
