Abstract

An improved optical system is disclosed for projecting light in the form of an image to a remote target. The laser light source and a holographic optical element are mounted together in optical alignment. The optical element is created using iterative discrete computer encoding for optimum efficiency. In alternate embodiments, the diffractive optical element has a collimating lens encoded into the grating levels and it also performs soft aperture circularizing using either amplitude or phase control over the coherent light. An embossed diffractive optical element laminated to an injection-molded refractive element is also disclosed.

Claims

1. A laser pointer comprising:

a case suitable for being hand held, the case having an opening through which light is projected;

a power source mounted within the case;

a source of coherent light mounted within the case and controllably connected to the power source;

a transparent substrate mounted within the case between the light source and the opening in the case;

a holographic optical element on a face of the transparent substrate for forming the light from the light source into a beam shape of predetermined form.

2. The pointer of claim 1 wherein the holographic optical element is formed in a face of the transparent substrate opposite to the light source.

3. The pointer of claim 1 wherein the holographic optical element is formed in a face of the transparent substrate adjacent to the light source and a face of the transparent substrate opposite to the light source acts to prevent occlusion of light through the opening in the case.

4. The pointer of claim 1 wherein the holographic element is a computer-generated diffractive optical element, the levels of which are calculated by a computer to diffract laser light into a complex pattern.

5. The pointer of claim 4 wherein the complex pattern is an arrow.

6. The pointer of claim 4 wherein the complex pattern is a logo.

7. The pointer of claim 4 wherein the computer-generated levels of the diffractive optical element are calculated by a computer to diffract un-collimated laser light into a substantially collimated complex image of picture element beams.

8. The pointer of claim 4 further comprising:

a plurality of computer-generated diffractive optical elements, the discrete levels of one of the computer-generated diffractive optical elements having been calculated by a computer to diffract laser light into an image of an arrow;

substitution means for exchanging the one computer-generated diffractive optical element for another one of the plurality of computer-generated diffractive optical elements, the levels of the another one of the computer-generated diffractive optical elements having been calculated by a computer to diffract laser light into another image.

9. The pointer of claim 8 wherein the substitution means is a slidable assemble which passes laser light through one of the plurality of computer-generated diffractive optical elements at a time.

10. The pointer of claim 8 wherein the diffractive optical elements are embossed into a layer of plastic.

11. A laser pointer having a housing and a source of coherent light, the improvement comprising:

an optical assembly mounted substantially in the path of the coherent light, for circularizing and collimating the coherent light, the assembly comprising a diffractive optical image generating element for generating an image to be projected onto a viewing surface.

16. The pointer of claim 11 wherein the circularizing, collimating and image generating is all provided by one diffractive optical element.

12. A laser pointer having a housing and a source of coherent light, the improvement comprising:

an optical assembly mounted substantially in the path of the coherent light, for circularizing and collimating the coherent light, the assembly comprising;

a refractive optical element having two surfaces in the path of the coherent light, the refractive optical element having on one surface, a diffractive optical image generating element for generating an image to be projected onto a viewing surface.

13. The pointer of claim 12 wherein the refractive optical element is an injection-molded plastic lens and wherein the image generating element is laminated to the one surface and a soft aperture element is laminated to the other surface of the lens.

14. The pointer of claim 12 wherein a soft aperture element and the image generating element are a combined diffractive phase grating.

15. The pointer of claim 13 wherein the image generating element is an embossed diffractive phase grating laminated to the refractive element.
