Abstract

A collision- or rapid deceleration-initiated stiffening system for a structural member of a motor vehicle frame. The system includes a structural member that defines a hollow, substantially gas-tight interior. The system also includes an inflator for pressurizing the interior of the structural member to increase the stiffness and the axial or buckle strength of the structural member upon collision or rapid deceleration of the motor vehicle. The inflator may produce inflation gas for pressurizing the structural member from different sources including the burning of solid pyrotechnic gas generant or the release of a stored gas, for example. In addition, the inflator may be initiated by different initiators including an electrical initiator squib connected to a remote deceleration sensor or a depressible initiator plunger in alignment with a bumper strut, for example. The inflator also may be used to inflate an airbag cushion of an airbag module in addition to pressurizing the structural member.

Claims

1. A collision- or rapid deceleration-initiated system for increasing rigidity and axial buckle strength of an elongated structural frame member of a motor vehicle frame, the system comprising:

an elongated structural frame member of a motor vehicle, the structural frame member containing a hollow, substantially gas-tight interior; and

pressurizing means for introducing pressurized fluid into the gas-tight interior of the structural frame member to pressurize the gas-tight interior of the structural frame member to a predetermined level upon rapid deceleration or collision of the motor vehicle whereby rigidity and axial buckle strength of the elongated structural frame member is increased.

2. The stiffening system of claim 1 wherein the pressurizing means comprises:

an inflator in fluid communication with the gas-tight interior of the structural frame member for providing pressurized fluid in the form of inflation gas upon initiation of the inflator;

initiating means for initiating the inflator; and

triggering means connected to or positioned with respect to the initiating means for triggering the initiating means upon rapid deceleration or collision of the motor vehicle.

3. The stiffening system of claim 2 wherein:

the structural frame member defining an opening communicating with the gas-tight interior;

the inflator defining at least one gas exhaust port for releasing the inflation gas; and

a conduit connecting the at least one gas exhaust port of the inflator with the opening defined by the structural frame member, whereby the at least one gas exhaust port communicates with the gas-tight interior of the structural frame member establishing the fluid communication between the inflator and the gas-tight interior of the structural frame member.

4. The stiffening system of claim 3 wherein:

the initiating means comprises an electrical initiator squib extending from a first end of a housing of the inflator; and

the triggering means comprises a remote electronic collision or rapid deceleration sensor connected to the initiator squib.

5. The stiffening system of claim 3 wherein:

the initiating means comprises a laser source connected to the inflator by a fiber optic wire; and

the triggering means comprises a remote collision or rapid deceleration sensor for triggering the laser source.

6. The stiffening system of claim 3 wherein:

the initiating means comprises a pyrotechnic transmission line connected to the inflator; and

the triggering means comprises a remote mechanical collision or rapid deceleration sensor for igniting the pyrotechnic transmission line.

7. The stiffening system of claim 3 wherein:

the initiating means comprises a percussion primer attached to a primary ignitor material positioned to initiate the inflator;

the triggering means comprises a mechanical deceleration sensor having an inertial mass carrying a firing pin axially aligned with the percussion primer, the mechanical deceleration sensor restraining the inertial mass from pushing the firing pin against the percussion primer until a predetermined deceleration level is reached.

8. The stiffening system of claim 3 wherein:

the initiating means comprises a depressible initiator plunger extending from the inflator for initiating the inflator upon being depressed into the inflator;

the triggering means comprises a bumper strut having a first end connectable to a bumper and a second end in axial alignment with the initiator plunger; and

resistance means preventing the bumper strut from depressing the initiator plunger into the inflator until a threshold amount of force is applied to the first end of the bumper strut.

9. The stiffening system of claim 3 wherein the inflator provides inflation gas from at least one of the following sources:

the burning of a pyrotechnic solid fuel, the burning of a fluid fuel/oxidizer, the release of a stored gas or the reaction of a monopropellant.

10. The stiffening system of claim 2 wherein:

the structural frame member defining an opening communicating with the gas-tight interior;

the inflator defining at least one gas exhaust port for releasing the inflation gas, with the inflator positioned adjacent to or within the opening defined by the structural frame member, so that the at least one gas exhaust port communicates with the interior of the structural frame member through the opening establishing the fluid communication between the inflator and the gas-tight interior of the structural frame member.

11. The stiffening system of claim 10 wherein:

the initiating means comprises an electrical initiator squib extending from a first end of a housing of the inflator; and

the triggering means comprises a remote electronic collision or rapid deceleration sensor connected to the initiator squib.

12. The stiffening system of claim 10 wherein:

the initiating means comprises a laser source connected to the inflator by a fiber optic wire; and

the triggering means comprises a remote collision or rapid deceleration sensor for triggering the laser source.

13. The stiffening system of claim 10 wherein:

the initiating means comprises a pyrotechnic transmission line connected to the inflator; and

the triggering means comprises a remote mechanical collision or rapid deceleration sensor for igniting the pyrotechnic transmission line.

14. The stiffening system of claim 10 wherein:

the initiating means comprises a percussion primer attached to a primary ignitor material positioned to initiate the inflator;

the triggering means comprises a mechanical deceleration sensor having an inertial mass carrying a firing pin that is axially aligned with the percussion primer, the mechanical deceleration sensor restraining the inertial mass from pushing the firing pin against the percussion primer until a predetermined deceleration level is reached.

15. The stiffening system of claim 10 wherein:

the initiating means comprises a depressible initiator plunger extending from the inflator for initiating the inflator upon being depressed into the inflator;

the triggering means comprises a bumper strut having a first end connectable to a bumper and a second end in axial alignment with the initiator plunger; and

resistance means preventing the bumper strut from depressing the initiator plunger into the inflator until a threshold amount of force is applied to the first end of the bumper strut.

16. The stiffening system of claim 15 wherein:

the structural frame member includes an elongated sidewall having a closed end and an open end, the sidewall and closed end partially defining the hollow, substantially gas-tight interior of the structural frame member, the open end of the sidewall forming a shoulder extending radially outwardly from the sidewall, the shoulder defining the opening of the structural frame member, a sleeve extending from the shoulder away from and in axial alignment with the sidewall, the sleeve terminating in an open sleeve end;

the inflator includes an inflator housing extending through the opening into the gas-tight interior of the structural frame member, a first end of the inflator housing having a flange extending outwardly from and transversely to the inflator housing, the flange butting against the shoulder of the structural frame member in a substantially gas-tight manner, and a second end of the inflator housing located within the gas-tight interior of the structural frame member, the second end defining the at least one gas exhaust port of the inflator;

the depressible initiator plunger extending from the first end of the inflator housing towards the open sleeve end;

the bumper strut slidingly received within the sleeve of the structural frame member with the first end of the bumper strut extending out of the sleeve through the open sleeve end and the second end of the bumper strut positioned within the sleeve in axial alignment with the depressible initiator plunger; and

the resistance means comprising a tight fit between the bumper strut and the sleeve of the structural frame member.

17. The stiffening system of claim 10 wherein the inflator provides inflation gas from at least one of the following sources:

the burning of a pyrotechnic solid fuel, the burning of a fluid fuel/oxidizer, the release of a stored gas or the reaction of a monopropellant.
