Abstract

An intravascular catheter carries a helical reinforcement member embedded within at least a portion of the tubular wall of the catheter. The helical reinforcement member comprises a helical first portion having coils of greater pitch than the pitch of helical coils of a second portion. Preferably, the catheter is for insertion into brain arteries, and comprises a flexible tube having an outer diameter of no more that about 0.05 inch, for example 3 French or smaller. The flexible tube defines outer and inner tubular layers. The inner tubular layer surrounds a catheter lumen and comprises chemically inert fluorinated polymer such as PTFE. The outer tubular layer comprises at least three longitudinally spaced, connected tubular sections. The sections are of successively increasing flexibility from the proximal toward the distal catheter end. Also, manufacturing methods are disclosed pertaining to increasing the flexibility of a section of the catheter and joining together in abutting relation a pair of dissimilar catheter reinforcement members.

Claims

1. A method of catheter component manufacture which comprises joining together a pair of porous, tubular catheter reinforcement members in end-to-end, abutting relation;

placing a curable adhesive on said joined ends;

covering said joined ends with a snug, non-adherent sleeve;

curing said adhesive; and

thereafter embedding said joined reinforcement members into a tubular plastic catheter wall.

2. The method of claim 1 comprising the step of removing said sleeve after curing said adhesive.

3. The method of claim 1 in which said adhesive is ultraviolet-cured, said sleeve being substantially transparent to ultraviolet radiation.

4. The method of claim 3 in which said sleeve is made of a fluorinated plastic.

5. The method of claim 1 in which said curable adhesive is a melted solder which is cured by cooling to solidification within said sleeve.

6. The method of catheter component manufacture which comprises joining together a pair of porous, tubular catheter reinforcement members in end-to-end, abutting relation;

placing a curable adhesive on said joined ends;

covering said joined ends with a snug, non-adherent sleeve which is transparent to ultraviolet radiation;

exposing said adhesive to ultraviolet radiation to cause curing of said adhesive; and

thereafter embedding said joined reinforcement members into a tubular plastic catheter wall.

7. The method of claim 6 in which said sleeve is made of a fluorinated plastic.

8. The method of claim 7 in which one of said pair of porous, tubular catheter reinforcement members comprises a tube of braided strands and the other of said pair of porous, tubular catheter reinforcement members comprises at least one helical strand without crossing strands.

9. A method of catheter component manufacture which comprises joining together a first tubular catheter reinforcement member comprising braided strands in end-to-end, abutting relation with a second tubular catheter reinforcement member which comprises at least one helical strand which is substantially free of crossing strands;

placing a curable adhesive on said joined ends;

covering said joined ends with a snug, non-adherent sleeve;

curing said adhesive; and

thereafter embedding said joined reinforcement members into a tubular plastic catheter wall.

10. The method of claim 9 comprising the step of removing said sleeve after curing said adhesive.

11. The method of claim 10 in which said adhesive is ultraviolet-cured, said sleeve being substantially transparent to ultraviolet radiation.
