1. A backlighting device comprising:

  • at least one linear light source;

    a light conducting plate made of a transparent material and having a side face adjacent to the light source, a thickness of the light conducting plate decreasing as a position goes away from the light source;

    light diffusing elements formed on a major surface of the light conducting plate opposite to a light exit surface thereof; and

    at least one sheet made of a transparent material having, on a same surface thereof, at least one of a number of prisms and protrusions having straight ridges that are arranged substantially parallel with each other at small intervals, the sheet being disposed on a side of the light exit surface of the light conducting plate so that extensions of the straight ridges are substantially perpendicular to a central, longitudinal axis of the light source.
