Abstract

A spectrophotometer which is highly manufacturable at minimum cost nevertheless provides precision of measurement of spectra components of light which is projected therein by maintaining precise optical alignment of optical and electrical components thereof. These components are mounted in a module which is contained in a housing having an entrance aperture which defines an object area for light the spectrum of which is measured by a photodetector in the module at an image area. The module has a base plate provided by a printed circuit board on which a closed wall encompasses an area (a corral) on one side of the circuit board. The wall is a one piece structure which extends to the vicinity of the edge of the board. It is assembled with the board as a unitary structure so that the assembly is made torsionally rigid and resists bending in the plane of the board. The module may be of sufficiently small size so as to be located in a housing which is hand held, thereby providing a hand-held spectrophotometer.

Claims

1. An electro-optical module comprising a flexible base plate and a self-supporting wall assembled to said plate on one side thereof into a unitary structure consisting essentially of said wall and plate and more rigid than said plate and wall alone, said wall surrounding an area on said one side of said plate sufficient in size to contain plurality of electrical and optical components in assembled relationship with at least one of said plate and said wall, a cover having a top overlying said area and extending outwardly of said area beyond said wall, said cover also having sides and a rim, said base plate having an edge, and said rim extending outwardly of said edge, said cover being assembled with said base plate and said wall from said top via said wall.

An electro-optical module comprising a flexible base plate and a self-supporting wall assembled to said plate on one side thereof into a unitary structure consisting essentially of said wall and plate and more rigid than said plate and wall alone, said wall surrounding an area on said one side of said plate sufficient in size to contain plurality of electrical and optical components in assembled relationship with at least one of said plate and said wall, and wherein said base plate is a circuit board having conductive traces, said components including said electrical components mounted on said board and connected to said traces, said board being of plastic material and of a thickness which permits bending thereof until assembled in said unitary structure with said plate provided by said board, said board having an edge and said wall being in the vicinity of said edge to define a corral for said components in said area, said wall being a molding of plastic material.

3. The module according to claim 2 wherein said plastic material of said molding is an etherimide containing glass homogeneously distributed therein.

4. The module according to claim 2 further comprising a cover having a top extending over said board and sides paralleling said wall along at least a substantial portion of said corral, said cover also being of moldable plastic material.

5. An electro-optical module comprising a flexible base plate and a self-supporting wall assembled to said plate on one side thereof into a unitary structure consisting essentially of said wall and plate and more rigid than said plate and wall alone, said wall surrounding an area on said one side of said plate sufficient in size to contain plurality of electrical and optical components in assembled relationship with at least one of said plate and said wall, and in combination with a pair of overlapping shells pivotally connectable to each other to define a casing, said shells being disposed in open relationship to receive and provide access to said module and in closed relationship to enclose said module.

An electro-optical module comprising a flexible base plate and a self-supporting wall assembled to said plate on one side thereof into a unitary structure consisting essentially of said wall and plate and more rigid than said plate and wall alone, said wall surrounding an area on said one side of said plate sufficient in size to contain plurality of electrical and optical components in assembled relationship with at least one of said plate and said wall, and wherein said wall has an entrance aperture for light, and said components provide a spectrophotometer for measuring the spectral components of said light, and wherein said spectrophotometer includes a light dispersing element which can be a grating, said element being pivotally about an axis and being pivotally mounted on said wall in said area to direct different spectral components of said light along an optical axis, said wall having at least another wall section parallel thereto and integral therewith and disposed in said area defining a light corridor in said area along said optical axis.

The module according to claim 6 wherein said light corridor has opposite ends respectively proximal and distal from said dispersing element, said distal end having an image aperture, a photodetector assembled to said wall receiving said spectral components of said light via said image aperture, and said proximal end having a lens mounted therein which condenses said light towards said image aperture.

The module according to claim 7 wherein said wall and said corridor have a plurality of archways spaced along said corridor and of size to progressively restrict the width of said corridor laterally of said optical axis, said archways being formed by notches extending along said walls alternately in opposite directions with respect to said base plate with the projection of said archways defining a closed passage for said spectral components of said light along said optical axis.

The module according to claim 8 wherein said walls of said corridor have notches extending in opposite directions toward and away from said base plate to define archways which are spaced from said entrance aperture in said wall and are of progressively greater width in a direction away from said entrance aperture so as to define a beam of said light which enters said entrance aperture.

10. The module according to claim 9 wherein said archways define baffles which obstruct the passage of stray light from said entrance aperture to said dispersing element and from said dispersing element to said image aperture.

The module according to claim 7 wherein said image aperture is a slit generally paralleling said pivot axis of said dispersing element, said slit being disposed adjacent to said photodetector, said slit being defined by a film of opaque material having transverse cuts which film is disposed upon said photodetector.

The module according to claim 9 wherein said dispersing element is mounted on an arm which is pivotally mounted on said wall, mirrors for bending said beam of light from said entrance aperture and directing said beam upon said dispersing element, snap-in brackets each having a hook ended flexible finger which flexes to receive the one of said element and said mirrors disposed therein in said arm and on said wall respectively.

The module according to claim 6 further comprising an arm which is pivotable with and connected to said dispersing element in a direction toward and away from one of said walls defining said light corridor, a flexural finger integral with said one wall, and means for precisely extending and retracting said finger to define a stop for indexing said arm and said dispersing element such that a spectral component having a selected wavelength is directed along said optical axis.

The module according to claim 6 wherein said corridor has ends distal and proximal to said dispersing element, a chamber in said corridor at said distal end thereof, a photodetector in said chamber, one of said walls defining said corridor having a flexural finger integral therewith and extending into said chamber and engageable with said photodetector, and means for extending and retracting said finger to clamp said photodetector in alignment with said optical axis.

The module according to claim 6 wherein said plate is a circuit board having opposite side surfaces on one of which said wall is mounted to define a corral for said components and said corridor, and said other of said surfaces of said board having a coating of opaque material at least in the area thereof underlying said corridor.

An electro-optical module comprising a flexible base plate and a self-supporting wall assembled to said plate on one side thereof into a unitary structure consisting essentially of said wall and plate and more rigid than said plate and wall alone, said wall surrounding an area on said one side of said plate sufficient in size to contain plurality of electrical and optical components in assembled relationship with at least one of said plate and said wall, and wherein said wall has an entrance aperture for light, and said components provide a spectrophotometer for measuring the spectral components of said light, and wherein said spectrophotometer includes a light disbursing element, a motor having a shaft projecting into said area, a journal connected to said wall and defining an axis of rotation parallel to and spaced from said shaft, an arm having a flexure member with tensioned and untensioned states and being rotatable on said journal so that said arm rotates about said axis, a rim on said arm spaced from said flexure member by a distance greater than the distance between said journal and said motor shaft when said flexure member is in said untensioned state, said arm being disposed on said journal and with said rim bearing against said shaft with said flexure member in its tension state, and said arm having a strut on which said dispersing element is pivotally mounted on said wall at said journal.

The module according to claim 16 wherein said journal is a post and said flexure member is a pair of hairpin flexures having aligned openings, said post having ends which are chamfered and sloped toward each other in a direction toward said shaft to provide bearing surfaces of said journal on sides thereof facing away from said shaft which are greater in area than on sides facing toward said shaft, said hairpin flexures being disposed in snap-on relationship on said journal with said posts in said openings in said hairpin flexures.

18. The module according to claim 16 wherein said arm comprises a hub connected to said flexure member and a plurality of spokes connected to said rim, said spokes defining an opening therebetween for light from said entrance aperture along a path to said dispersing element.

19. The module according to claim 16 further comprising a bracket having top and bottom surfaces on which said dispersing element is mounted on said strut, means providing a slidable contact between said bottom of said bracket and said plate, and means for indexing said element against said plate.

20. The module according to claim 19 wherein said indexing means is provided by a flat spring cantilever mounted on said wall and bearing against said top surface of said bracket.

21. An electro-optical module comprising a flexible base plate and a self-supporting wall assembled to said plate on one side thereof into a unitary structure consisting essentially of said wall and plate and more rigid than said plate and wall alone, said wall surrounding an area on said one side of said plate sufficient in size to contain plurality of electrical and optical components in assembled relationship with at least one of said plate and said wall, and wherein said wall has an entrance aperture for light, and said components provide a spectrophotometer for measuring the spectral components of said light, and further comprising an extension integral with said wall and projecting outwardly from said entrance aperture beyond said plate, said extension having a receptacle which receives a cuvette for a sample, and means for projecting light through said cuvette into said entrance aperture for spectral analysis of said sample.

The module according to claim 21 wherein said projecting means is an electrically actuable source of illumination, a pivotable cover for closure of said cuvette, and the switch in said extension for electrically actuating said source when engaged by said cover upon closure of said cuvette with said cover.

In a spectrophotometer which includes a grating element pivotally mounted for rotation about an axis to direct different spectral components of light over a wavelength range along an optical axis to a image area for translation into electrical signals by a photodetector, at the improvement comprising a lens for focusing light at said image and having a dispersion to compensate longitudinal chromatic aberration which varies with the angular orientation of said element as it pivots with respect to said optical axis.

24. The spectrophotometer according to claim 23 wherein the lens has an Abbe number dependant upon the geometry of the spectrophotometer which is ##EQU6## where f is the focal length of the lens and Δ

25. The spectrophotometer according to claim 23 wherein said grating, said lens and said photodetector are disposed such that the light diffracted by said grating encounters only said lens along a path between said grating and said photodetector.

26. The spectrophotometer according to claim 23 wherein said light from said grating travels over a straight path between said grating and said photodetector.

27. The spectrophotometer according to claim 23 wherein said axis of rotation of said grating is spaced from said grating.

28. The spectrophotometer according to claim 27 wherein said grating is mounted on an arm pivotable about said axis and said spacing is the distance between said grating and said axis along said arm.
