Infusion pump, treatment fluid bag therefor, and method for the use thereof
First Claim
1. An infusion system including an infusion pump and a removable treatment fluid bag that can be positioned within a containment receptacle of the infusion pump, the infusion pump having an inflatable bladder, an electronic control circuit, and a pressure sensor, the treatment fluid bag including:
- (1) a port for introducing fluid into the treatment fluid bag;
(2) an extension set, attached to the treatment fluid bag, for delivering treatment fluid to a patient; and
(3) an activator device for activating the electronic control circuit which controls the expulsion of treatment fluid from the fluid bag, wherein the electronic control circuit controls the expulsion of treatment fluid from the fluid bag by controllably inflating the inflatable bladder against the fluid bag when the bag is positioned within the containment receptacle, and wherein the electronic control circuit is in operative communication with the pressure sensor which is, in turn, in operative communication with the bladder.

Abstract
An infusion pump for infusing a medical treatment fluid intravenously to a patient includes a collapsible treatment fluid bag juxtaposed with an inflatable drive fluid bladder confined between a pair of opposing containment members which cause the bladder to impinge against the bag as the bladder is inflated. A drive fluid pump controllably inflates the bladder, thereby displacing treatment fluid from the bag into an outlet tube affixed thereto which conveys the treatment fluid to the patient where it is received intravenously. The treatment fluid flow rate through the tube is controlled by increasing or decreasing the drive fluid pump output and consequently the pressure in the bladder in response to a pressure sensor in fluid communication with the bladder. Alternatively, the treatment fluid flow rate is adjusted by opening or closing the outlet tube by means of an occluder or restrictor positioned along the tube.
