Abstract

An image display apparatus which employs a polarization-sensitive scattering element (PSSE). In the display, a light source is used to illuminate a panel which modulates light in order to form an image. Positioned between the light source and the panel is the PSSE which acts to effectively separate light of different polarizations. The PSSE provides a means for recapturing light energy which would otherwise be lost in the display, while reducing degradation and heat build-up due to light absorption.

Claims

1. An image display apparatus comprising:

a source of light rays;

a polarization-sensitive scattering element (PSSE) located proximate to said source of light rays, where said PSSE is a microstructural composite of material domains having differing birefringence, having a first scattering distribution which is randomly diffuse for light rays of a first polarization and a second scattering distribution for light rays of a second polarization; and

a light modulating means in the path of said light rays which selectively passes light in order to display a desired image.

2. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the second scattering distribution is such that the light rays of the second polarization are substantially non-scattered.

3. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the PSSE is a uniaxial homogeneously-aligned structure formed from droplets made of liquid crystal embedded in polymer matrix, the droplets are physically stretched along a common axis, and refractive indices of the liquid crystal are selected such that either one of the ordinary index or extraordinary index of the liquid crystal matches the corresponding index of the polymer matrix.

4. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the PSSE is a uniaxial homogeneously-aligned PDLC structure formed from liquid crystal droplets aligned in a common direction by application of an electric field.

5. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the PSSE is a uniaxial homogeneously-aligned PDLC structure formed from liquid crystal droplets aligned in a common direction by application of an electromagnetic field.

6. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the PSSE is comprised of small diameter fibers aligned and embedded in a matrix, wherein the scattering profile of the PSSE is dependent upon the material refractive indexes, fiber diameter and number of fibers.

7. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the PSSE is comprised of a plurality of birefringent crystals aligned along an optical axis and embedded within a non-birefringent matrix.

8. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein a portion of the material domains are substantially non-birefringent.

9. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the PSSE is comprised of liquid crystal with alternating domains contained within, formed by locally polymerizing separate regions with a transverse aligning field selectively applied.

10. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the PSSE is a PDLC structure in which the liquid crystalline domains have been polymerized with an aligned orientation.

11. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein said image generating apparatus is a liquid crystal display and a reflecting means is positioned proximate to said source of light rays.

12. The image display apparatus of claim 11 wherein the reflecting means is a diffusely reflecting cavity which partially encloses said source of light rays.

13. The image display apparatus of claim 12 wherein the PSSE is substantially backscattering for one polarization and substantially transparent for a polarization orthogonal to the backscattering polarization, such that light of the backscattering polarization is returned to the cavity.

14. The image display apparatus of claim 13, wherein the diffusely reflecting cavity is approximately shaped as a half-cylinder and said source of light rays is positioned at one edge of the cavity behind a light block so that said source of light rays is not directly viewable, the light from said source of light rays is diffusely reflected off the cavity in a uniform manner.

15. The image display apparatus of claim 13 wherein a light diffusing element is placed proximate to the PSSE such that said source of light rays is not directly viewable.

16. The image display apparatus of claim 12 wherein a second source of light rays is provided in the diffusely reflecting cavity for alternate lighting situations.

17. The image display apparatus of claim 16 wherein the second source of light rays is pre-polarized and is substantially scattered by the PSSE.

18. The image display apparatus of claim 11 wherein the reflecting means is comprised of a light guide with first and second opposing sides and a reflector proximate to said light guide, wherein the reflector is positioned on the first side of the light guide and the PSSE is positioned on the second side of the light guide.

19. The image display apparatus of claim 18 further comprising a quarter wave retarder plate positioned between said PSSE and said reflector, said quarter wave retarder plate is oriented such that the polarization of light backscattered and reflected from said PSSE is converted by the quarter wave retarder plate and the reflector to subsequently pass through the PSSE.

20. The image display apparatus of claim 18 wherein diffusing elements are contained within the light guide to frustrate total internal reflection within the light guide and cause the light rays to exit the light guide uniformly.

21. The image display apparatus of claim 20 wherein the light guide is in the form of a transparent plate, and light from the source of light rays enters the light guide along the edges of the light guide.

22. The image display apparatus of claim 11 wherein the reflecting means is comprised of a light guide with exterior edges and first and second opposing sides and a reflector, said reflector is proximate to the first side of said light guide, while the image display apparatus is positioned proximate to the second side of the light guide, wherein light from the source of light rays enters the light guide along the edges of the light guide and the PSSE is embedded within the light guide such that light rays of the second polarization remain trapped within the light guide, and total internal reflection for light rays of the first polarization is frustrated by the PSSE such that a portion of light rays of the first polarization are deflected and exit the light guide.

23. The image display apparatus of claim 22 further comprising polarization modification means disposed within the light guide to convert the light rays of the second polarization to the first polarization such that said light rays may be deflected by the PSSE and exit the light guide.

24. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein the image display apparatus is a liquid crystal projection system.

25. The image display apparatus of claim 24 wherein the liquid crystal projection system further comprises:

a display means positioned remote from said light modulation means on which the image generated by said light modulation means is viewed; and

optics positioned between said light modulation means and said display means to focus the image generated by said light modulation means on said display means.

26. The image display apparatus of claim 25 wherein said PSSE is incorporated into said display means where the polarization of the light rays emerging from said light modulation means matches a scattering axis of the PSSE in the display means.

27. The image display apparatus of claim 24 wherein the liquid crystal projection system further comprises collimation optics positioned between said light modulation means and an observer which alter the perceived distance between the observer and the light modulation means.

28. The image display apparatus of claim 24 wherein said PSSE is positioned between said source of light rays and said light modulation means to reduce light energy absorbed by a rear polarizer incorporated into said light modulation means.

29. The image display apparatus of claim 24 wherein said source of the light rays is a directional light source and said PSSE is incorporated into a polarization converting means positioned between the directional light source and said light modulation means.

30. The image display apparatus of claim 29 wherein the polarization converting means contains spatially modulated retardation means wherein a first set of light rays having the first polarization and a second set of light rays having the second polarization are substantially spatially separated by the PSSE, and the retardation means rotates the polarization of the second set of light rays such that the first and second sets of light rays exit the polarization converting means having the same polarization.

31. The image display apparatus of claim 1 wherein a diffuse PSSE reflector is located adjacent to the light modulating means, such that a portion of the light incident on the light modulating means passes through the light modulating means, is diffusely reflected by the PSSE reflector in a non-depolarizing manner, and is modulated by the light modulating means.

32. A polarization converter for directional light comnprising:

a polarization-sensitive scattering element (PSSE) where said PSSE is substantially non-scattering to light rays of a first polarization and randomly scattering to light rays of a second polarization;

a first set of aperture openings with first polarization optics; and

a second set of aperture openings with second polarization optics;

wherein;

light rays of a first polarization incident on the PSSE passes predominantly through the first set of aperture openings and are converted by the first polarization optics to a third polarization;

light rays of a second polarization incident on the PSSE are scattered by the PSSE and passes predominantly through the second set of aperture openings and are converted by the second polarization optics to the third polarization.

33. The polarization converter of claim 32 wherein the third polarization is identical to the first polarization.

34. A polarized light valve display system comprising:

an unpolarized illumination source;

a polarization-based light valve; and

a polarization-sensitive scattering element (PSSE) proximate to said illumination source, where said PSSE is a microstructural composite of material domains having differing birefringence, having a first scattering distribution which is random for light rays of a first polarization and a second scattering distribution for light rays of a second polarization;

wherein light from the unpolarized illumination source is pre-polarized by the PSSE prior to being modulated by the polarization-based light valve.

35. The polarized light valve display system of claim 34 wherein unpolarized light from the unpolarized illumination source is converted to a single polarization of light prior to being modulated by the polarization-based light valve.

36. A polarized backlight comprising:

a transparent light guide with external edges and first and second opposing sides;

illumination means at the edges of the light guide, such that light entering the light guide is totally internally reflected by one or more surfaces of the light guide;

polarization-sensitive deflection means in the light guide to deflect light rays of a first polarization, causing them to exit the light guide, while light rays of a second polarization are substantially non-deflected; and

polarization rotation means within the light guide for changing the light rays of the second polarization to the light rays of the first polarization.

37. The polarized backlight of claim 36 wherein the polarization-sensitive deflection means comprises a microstructural composite of material domains having differing birefringence.

38. The polarized backlight of claim 36, further comprising reflector means, adjacent to the light guide, to redirect the light rays exiting the light guide from the first side back into the light guide such that it may exit from the secondside of the light guide.

39. A polarized backlight comprising:

a transparent light guide with external edges and first and second opposing sides;

illumination means at the edges of the light guide, such that light rays entering the light guide are totally internally reflected by one or more surfaces of the light guide;

diffusing means in the light guide to deflect the light rays, causing the light rays to exit the light guide;

reflector means, adjacent to the light guide, to redirect the light rays exiting the light guide from the first side back into the light guide such that it may exit from the second side of the light guide;

non-absorbing polarization means which is a microstructural composite of material domains having differing birefringence, adjacent to said light guide, and opposite the light guide from the reflector means, such that light rays of a first polarization pass through the non-absorbing polarization means and light rays of a second polarization are returned to the light guide in a randomly diffuse manner; and

polarization rotation means for rotating the polarization of the light rays of the second polarization returned to the light guide such that it is returned to the non-absorbing polarization means in the first polarization and is transmitted.

40. A polarized backlight comprising:

a diffuse, highly reflective enclosure;

an illumination source which injects light rays into the enclosure;

depolarization means located within the enclosure;

non-absorbing polarization means, comprising a microstructural composite of material domains having differing birefringence, wherein said non-absorbing polarization means is positioned over a region of the enclosure, said region having significant transmittance of light from within the enclosure such that light rays of a first polarization exit the enclosure and pass through the non-absorbing polarization means, while light rays of a second polarization exit the enclosure and are returned to the enclosure by the non-absorbing polarization means.

41. The polarized backlight of claim 40 wherein the non-absorbing polarization means has color properties which are insensitive to viewing angle.

42. The polarized backlight of claim 40 further comprising a diffusing element between the illumination source and the non-absorbing polarization means.

43. The polarized backlight of claim 40 further comprising a polarization-preserving diffuser adjacent to the non-absorbing polarization means.

44. A light valve system comprising:

a source of light rays;

a light valve which selectively modulates the polarization state of said light rays;

polarization means to convert the polarization modulation of said light rays into amplitude modulation of the light rays; and

a polarization-sensitive scattering element in the path of said light rays where said polarization-sensitive scattering element is a microstructural composite of material domains having differing birefringence, having a first scattering distribution which is random for light rays of a first polarization and a second scattering distribution for light rays of a second polarization.

45. The light valve system of claim 44, wherein said light rays comprise light rays of a first polarization and light rays of a second polarization and said light rays of the first polarization and said light rays of the second polarization are differentially deflected by the polarization-sensitive scattering element.

46. The light valve system of claim 45, wherein the light rays of the first polarization are substantially deflected by the polarization-sensitive scattering element and the polarization-sensitive scattering element is substantially transparent to light rays of the second polarization.

The light valve system of claim 45, further comprising an interface for total internal reflection, wherein the light rays of the second polarization undergo total internal reflection at said interface after passing through the polarization-sensitive scattering element and a portion of the light rays of the first polarization are transmitted through said interface after passing through the polarization-sensitive scattering element.

48. The light valve system of claim 44, further comprising aperture means, wherein

the light rays of the first polarization are blocked by the aperture means after passing through the polarization-sensitive scattering element and the light rays of the second polarization are not blocked by the aperture means after passing through the polarization-sensitive scattering element.

49. The light valve system of claim 44, further comprising a backlight cavity, wherein the polarization-sensitive scattering element is between the backlight cavity and the light valve,

light rays of a first polarization emanating from the backlight cavity pass through the polarization-sensitive scattering element and light rays of a second polarization emanating from the backlight cavity are substantially returned to the backlight cavity by the polarization-sensitive scattering element.

50. The light valve system of claim 49, further comprising means for depolarizing and reflecting the light rays returned to the backlight cavity by the polarization-sensitive scattering element.

51. The light valve system of claim 49, further comprising means for reflecting and rotating the polarization of the light rays returned to the backlight cavity by the polarization-sensitive scattering element.

52. The light valve system of claim 48, wherein the light valve is a color light valve having a matrix of reflective color filters which return locally unused spectral components to the backlight cavity.
