A method of obtaining an isolated cellular composition comprising greater than 90% mammalian, non tumor-derived, neuronal progenitor cells which express a neuronal marker and which give rise to progeny which differentiate into neuronal cells, comprising isolating cells from the portion of a mammalian brain that is the equivalent of the anterior portion of the subventricular zone at the dorsolateral portion of the anterior-most extent of the region surrounding the ventricle of a neonatal rat brain and culturing the isolated cells in the absence of mitotic inhibitors.
