Abstract

The present invention is a method and apparatus for providing preferential enhancement of an artery of interest relative to adjacent veins and background tissue. The method and apparatus adapts the timing of a maximum or substantially elevated rate of infusion to correlate with the collection of image data corresponding to the center of k-space. The technique and apparatus temporally correlates the timing of a maximum or substantially elevated rate of infusion and the mapping of k-space according to the location of the artery of interest, the size of the artery of interest, the physical condition of the patient, the time delay due to the configuration of the contrast agent delivery system, and/or the type of pulse sequence employed by the imaging apparatus. Adapting the timing of a maximum or substantially elevated rate of infusion to correlate with the collection of image data corresponding to the center of k-space provides a period of a maximum or substantially elevated contrast concentration in the artery of interest relative to adjacent veins during collection of at least a portion of the image data corresponding to the center of k-space.

Claims

1. A method of imaging a portion of an artery in a patient using magnetic resonance imaging, comprising,

collecting a first image data set;

administering a magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient; and

collecting a second image data set including collecting image data which is representative of a substantial portion of a center of k-space while a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially higher than a concentration of contrast agent in adjacent veins and background tissue.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the steps of collecting the first and second image data sets include using 3D gradient echo pulse sequences and the step of administering the magnetic resonance contrast agent includes administering the contrast agent to the patient by bolus injection.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein at least one of the 3D gradient echo pulse sequences is a 3D spoiled gradient echo pulse sequence.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of collecting first image data set includes collecting data before administering a magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space while a flip angle is between about 20°

to about 90°

6. The method of claim 1 further including constructing an image of the artery by subtracting at least two images selected from a set of images comprising the images produced by the first image data set and images produced by the second image data set.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting at least 25% of the image data which is representative of the center of k-space while the concentration of contrast agent in the artery is substantially a maximum.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting image data which is representative of a substantial portion of the center of k-space while the concentration of contrast agent in the artery is substantially a maximum.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein the step of administering the magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient further includes administering the contrast agent to the patient substantially throughout collecting the second image data set.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting a portion of the image data which is representative of a center of k-space while the concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially a maximum.

11. A method of imaging a portion of an artery in a patient using magnetic resonance imaging, the method comprising,

collecting a first image data set before administering a substantial amount of a magnetic resonance contrast agent;

administering a magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient; and

collecting a second image data set including collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of a center of k-space while a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is about a maximum relative to a concentration of contrast agent in adjacent veins and background tissue.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of administering a magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient includes administering the contrast agent to the patient by bolus injection.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting a substantial portion of the image data which is representative of the center of k-space while the concentration of contrast agent in the artery is substantially higher than a concentration of contrast agent in adjacent veins and background tissue.

14. The method of claim 11 wherein the steps of collecting the first and second image data sets further include using 3D gradient echo pulse sequences.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein at least one of 3D gradient echo pulse sequences is a 3D spoiled gradient echo pulse sequence.

16. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting a substantial portion of the center of k-space while a flip angle is between about 20°

to about 90°

The method of claim 11 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting the image data which is representative of the center of k-space during administration of the contrast agent and while the concentration of contrast agent in the artery is substantially higher than a concentration of contrast agent in adjacent veins and background tissue.

18. The method of claim 11 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting substantially all of the center of k-space while the concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially greater than a concentration of the contrast agent in veins adjacent to the artery.

19. The method of claim 11 further includes constructing an image of the artery using the second image data set.

20. The method of claim 19 further includes constructing an image of the artery by subtracting at least two images selected from a set of images comprising the images produced by the first image data set and images produced by the second image data set.

21. A method of imaging a portion of an artery in a patient using magnetic resonance imaging, the portion of the artery being within a region of interest, the method comprising,

collecting a first image data set

administering a magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient;

and

collecting a second image data set including;

collecting image data which is representative of at least a portion of a center of k-space while a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is about a maximum relative to a concentration of contrast agent in adjacent veins and background tissue; and

collecting image data which is representative of a substantial portion of the center of k-space while a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially higher than a concentration of the contrast agent in veins and background tissue adjacent to the artery.

22. The method of claim 21 wherein the step of administering a magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient includes administering the contrast agent to the patient by bolus injection and the step of collecting the second image data set includes using a 3D gradient echo pulse sequence.

23. The method of claim 22 wherein at least one of the 3D gradient echo pulse sequences is a 3D spoiled gradient echo pulse sequence.

24. The method of claim 21 further includes constructing an image of the artery by subtracting at least two images selected from a set of images comprising the images produced by the first image data set and images produced by the second image data set.

25. The method of claim 21 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting a substantial portion of the image data which is representative of the center of k-space while the concentration of contrast agent in the artery is substantially higher than a concentration of contrast agent in adjacent veins and background tissue and while a flip angle is between about 20°

to about 90°

26. The method of claim 21 wherein the step of collecting image data which is representative of the substantial portion of the center of k-space includes collecting image data while a slice thickness is less than 5 millimeters.

27. The method of claim 21 wherein the step of collecting image data which is representative of the substantial portion of the center of k-space includes collecting image data using a coronally oriented imaging volume.

28. The method of claim 21 further including constructing an image of the artery by subtracting the image data of the first image data set from the image data of the second image data set.

29. The method of claim 21 further including constructing an image of the artery by subtracting the image data of the second image data set from the image data of the first image data set.

30. The method of claim 21 wherein the step of collecting image data which is representative of the substantial portion of the center of k-space includes collecting image data using a coronally oriented imaging volume and wherein a field of view is greater than about 30 centimeters.

31. A method of imaging an artery in a patient using magnetic resonance imaging, comprising,

collecting a first image data set;

administering a magnetic resonance contrast agent to the patient; and

collecting a second image data set using a body coil, the step of collecting the second image data set includes collecting image data which is representative of a substantial portion of a center of k-space while a concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially higher than a concentration of the contrast agent in adjacent veins and background tissue.

32. The method of claim 31 wherein the steps of collecting the first and second image data sets includes using 3D gradient echo pulse sequences.

33. The method of claim 31 wherein at least one of the 3D gradient echo pulse sequences is a 3D spoiled gradient echo pulse sequence.

34. The method of claim 31 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting a portion of the center of k-space while the concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially a maximum.

35. The method of claim 31 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting the image data which is representative of the center of k-space while a flip angle is between about 20°

to about 90°

36. The method of claim 31 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting at least 50% of the image data which is representative of the center of k-space while the concentration of the contrast agent in the artery is substantially higher than the concentration of the contrast agent in veins adjacent to the artery and while a flip angle is between about 20°

37. The method of claim 31 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting image data which is representative of the substantial portion of the center of k-space during administration of the contrast agent and while a flip angle is between about 25°

38. The method of claim 31 further includes constructing an image of the artery using the second image data set.

39. The method of claim 31 further includes constructing an image of the artery by subtracting at least two images selected from a set of images comprising the images produced by the first image data set and images produced by the second image data set.

40. The method of claim 39 wherein the step of collecting the second image data set further includes collecting the image data which is representative of the center of k-space while a flip angle is between about 20°

to about 90°

41. The method of claim 31 wherein the step of collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space includes collecting image data while a slice thickness is less than 5 millimeters.

42. The method of claim 31 wherein the step of collecting image data which is representative of the center of k-space includes collecting image data using a coronally oriented imaging volume and wherein a field of view is greater than about 30 centimeters.

43. The method of claim 31 further including constructing an image of the artery by subtracting the image data of the first image data set from the image data of the second image data set.

44. The method of claim 31 further including constructing an image of the artery by subtracting the image data of the second image data set from the image data of the first image data set.
