Abstract

A method and apparatus transduces between mechanical and electrical signals within a middle ear to improve hearing. An electromechanical transducer film, preferably polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), is carried by a mount secured to the middle ear. The film is constrained by the mount, or by the mount and an auditory element. The apparatus includes substantially straight, bow-shaped, hoop-shaped, and bi-element transducer film embodiments. The film transduces between mechanical vibrations of an auditory element, such as the malleus or stapes, and electrical signals for use with an electronics unit of a partial middle ear implantable (P-MEI) or total middle ear implantable (T-MEI) hearing aid.

Claims

1. A method of vibrating an auditory element of a middle ear, the method comprising the steps of:

securing a mount, on which a piezoelectric transducer film is disposed, to a mastoid in the middle ear;

applying an electrical input signal to the film to dynamically vary at least one physical dimension of the film;

constraining the film such that variations in any physical dimension of the film produce film vibrations; and

mechanically coupling the film vibrations to the auditory element.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of disposing a piezoelectric transducer film on the mount prior to the step of securing the mount to the middle ear.

3. The method of claim 1, in which the step of constraining the film includes transforming the variation in the physical dimension of the film into an approximately orthogonal variation in position of a driving point of the film for vibrating the auditory element.

4. A vibrator for an implantable hearing system including an electronics unit providing an electrical input signal, the vibrator comprising:

a mount, adapted to be secured to a mastoid in a middle ear; and

a piezoelectric transducer film, carried by the mount, proportioned to be mechanically coupled to the middle ear and to vibrate an auditory element in response to the electrical input signal.

5. The vibrator of claim 4, in which the film is constrained by the mount at a plurality of constraint points.

6. The vibrator of claim 5, in which the film is constrained by the mount to transform longitudinal variations in a physical dimension of the film into vibrations of the auditory element.

7. The vibrator of claim 4, in which the film has a hoop shape.

8. The vibrator of claim 4, in which the film has a substantially straight length.

9. The vibrator of claim 4, in which the film has a bow shape.

10. The vibrator of claim 4, further comprising first and second arms, each extending radially outward from the mount and mechanically coupled to the film.

11. The vibrator of claim 4, in which the film comprises polyvinylidene fluoride.

12. The vibrator of claim 4, in which the piezoelectric transducer film is mechanically coupled to the mount at first and second constraint points, and having between the first and second constraint points at least one driving point on the film coupled to an auditory element at the driving point such that a variation in a film length between the first and second constraint points is transformed into an approximately orthogonal variation in position of the driving point for vibrating the auditory element.

13. The vibrator of claim 4, in which the film comprises a bi-element transducer film.

14. A method of sensing vibrations of an auditory element of a middle ear, the method comprising the steps of:

securing a mount, on which a piezoelectric transducer film is disposed, to a mastoid in the middle ear;

constraining the film at a plurality of constraint points;

receiving at the film the vibrations of the auditory element; and

producing a resulting output voltage in response to the vibrations.

15. The method of claim 14, in which the resulting output voltage is produced across a thickness of the film and provided to an electronics unit.

16. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of disposing the piezoelectric transducer film on the mount prior to the step of securing the mount to the middle ear.

17. The method of claim 14, further comprising the step of securing the piezoelectric transducer film to the auditory element.

18. An apparatus, comprising:

a mount adapted to be secured to a mastoid in a middle ear; and

a piezoelectric transducer film carried by the mount, in which the film is proportioned for mechanically coupling to an auditory element in the middle ear, and the film is adapted for receiving vibrations from the auditory element and producing a resulting output voltage in response to the vibrations.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, further comprising an electronics unit that is electrically coupled to the film.

20. The apparatus of claim 18, in which the film is secured at a plurality of constraint points.

21. The apparatus of claim 18, in which the film is constrained by the mount to transform vibrations of the auditory element into longitudinal dimensional variations of the film.

22. The apparatus of claim 18, in which the film has a hoop shape.

23. The apparatus of claim 18, in which the film has a substantially straight length.

24. The apparatus of claim 18, in which the film has a bow shape.

25. The apparatus of claim 18, further comprising first and second arms, each extending radially outward from the mount and mechanically coupled to the film.

26. The apparatus of claim 18, in which the film comprises polyvinylidene fluoride.

27. The apparatus of claim 18, in which the film is coupled at a vibrated point to an auditory element within the middle ear, and mechanically coupled to the mount at first and second constraint points such that vibrations received from the auditory element at the vibrated point produce a variation in a longitudinal direction of the film which in turn produces a resulting output voltage.

28. The apparatus of claim 27, further comprising an electronics unit that is electrically coupled to the film.

29. The apparatus of claim 18, in which the film comprises a bi-element transducer film.

30. A method of vibrating an auditory element of a middle ear, the method comprising the steps of:

securing a mount, on which a piezoelectric transducer film is disposed, to a mastoid in the middle ear;

applying an electrical input signal to the film to dynamically vary a longitudinal dimension of the film;

constraining the film such that the longitudinal dimensional variations produce film vibrations; and

mechanically coupling the film vibrations to the auditory element.

31. A vibrator for an implantable hearing system that includes an electronics

unit providing an electrical input signal, the vibrator comprising:

a mount, adapted to be secured to a mastoid in a middle ear; and

a piezoelectric transducer film, constrained by the mount at a plurality of constraint points, and proportioned to be mechanically coupled to the middle ear and to vibrate an auditory element in response to the electrical input signal.

32. The vibrator of claim 31, in which the film is constrained by the mount to transform longitudinal variations in a physical dimension of the film into vibrations of the auditory element.

33. An apparatus, comprising:

a mount adapted to be secured to a mastoid in a middle ear; and

a piezoelectric transducer film carried by the mount, in which the film is proportioned for mechanically coupling to an auditory element in the middle ear, and the film is adapted for receiving vibrations from the auditory element and producing a resulting output voltage in response to the vibrations, and the film is constrained by the mount to transform vibrations of the auditory element into longitudinal dimensional variations of the film.
