1. A method of locating a communication unit in a communication system, the method comprising the steps of:

  • determining, at the communication unit, whether a predetermined number of reference signals transmitted from a corresponding predetermined number of base stations are capable of being decoded;

    if the predetermined number of signals transmitted from a corresponding predetermined number of base stations are unable to be decoded, activating an auxiliary base station to transmit an additional reference signal; and

    determining the location of the communication unit based on the reference signals transmitted from base stations which are capable of being decoded and the additional reference signal transmitted by the auxiliary base station.
