1. An electrode for supporting an arc in a plasma arc torch, said electrode comprising:

  • a metallic holder having a front end, and a cavity in said front end; and

    an insert assembly mounted in said cavity and comprising an emissive insert composed of a metallic material having a relatively low work function, a sleeve which surrounds at least a portion of said emissive insert so as to separate said portion of said emissive insert from contact with said holder, said sleeve being composed of a metal which is selected from the group consisting of silver, gold, platinum, rhodium, iridium, palladium, nickel, and alloys thereof,wherein said metallic holder includes an overlay portion at said front end, said overlay portion directly contacting said emissive insert so that none of said sleeve is exposed at said front end.
