Abstract

A manual gas venting and cutting apparatus for use in cutting an opening in and manually venting gas from the interior of a conventional unvented ostomy collection pouch includes a valve assembly having an open position, which permits gas to pass therethrough and a closed position, for preventing gas to pass therethrough. The valve assembly has an input portion for communicating with the interior of the ostomy collection pouch and an output portion for communicating with the atmosphere and a mounting device for mounting the valve assembly to a selected portion of the ostomy collection pouch. The mounting device releasably contains therein a portion of the valve assembly so as to position the input portion thereof proximate the interior of the ostomy collection pouch, and the output portion of the valve assembly proximate to the atmosphere. Also included is a cutting device for providing a geometrically-shaped opening through the ostomy collection pouch, which provides access to the interior thereof utilizing the valve mounting device which, after the opening has been made, is replaced by the valve assembly.

Claims

1. A cutting assembly for cutting a geometrically-shaped opening through a thin plastic material having a generally flat surface, comprising:

A. retainer means, said retainer means being generally circularly-shaped and provided with a centrally disposed aperture;

B. cooperating disc member having a depending flange portion having;

a) an inside diameter adapted to cooperate with the external diameter of the retainer means with a portion of said material therearound, and

b) a centrally disposed aperture;

C. elongated holding means, said holding means rotatably disposed within said cooperating means centrally disposed aperture having;

a) a cutting device disposed on one distal end thereof, said cutting device being provided with a protruding portion generally disposed in line with the circumference of said centrally disposed aperture provided in said internal retainer, and

b) rotation means for rotating said elongated holding means on the other end thereof to allow rotation of said elongated holding means of said cutting device;

wherein when said elongated holding means is rotated, said cutting device, disposed on said one distal end of said elongated holding means, cuts a geometrically-shaped hole through said material.

2. A cutting assembly for cutting a geometrically-shaped opening through a material having a generally flat surface, according to claim 1, wherein said sharpened portion is a burr.

3. A cutting assembly for cutting a geometrically-shaped opening through a material having a generally flat surface, according to claim 1, wherein said sharpened portion is a tapered tab.

A cutting assembly for cutting a geometrically-shaped opening through a material having a generally flat surface, according to claim 1, wherein said one distal end of said cutting device is provided with a generally flat surface that is circularly-shaped and onto which said sharpened portion is provided.
