Abstract

An apparatus and method for recalibrating a multi-color imaging system are provided. The multi-color imaging system is capable of applying different colorants to a substrate based on a plurality of input color values. The input color values control amounts of the colorants to be applied to the substrate by the imaging system. A subset of the input color values is selected and used to control the imaging system to apply one or more of the different colorants to the substrate, thereby forming a plurality of different color patches on the substrate. The subset of input color values is selected such that one or more of the different color patches is formed by application of a combination of at least two of the different colorants to the substrate. Color values are measured for each of the different color patches, and compared to reference color values, representing a calibrated condition of the imaging system. An error value is calculated. The error value represents a deviation of the measured color values from the reference color values. The input color values for each colorant then are independently adjusted to reduce the error value to a predetermined degree.

Claims

1. A method for recalibrating a multi-color imaging system, said imaging system being capable of applying a plurality of different colorants to a substrate based on a plurality of input color values, wherein said input color values control amounts of said colorants to be applied to said substrate by said imaging system, the method comprising a plurality of steps including:

(a) selecting a subset of said plurality of input color values;

(b) forming a plurality of different color patches on said substrate by applying one or more of said different colorants to said substrate based on said subset of said plurality of input color values, wherein step (a) selects said subset of said plurality of input color values such that one or more of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of at least two of said different colorants to said substrate;

(c) measuring a plurality of color values for each of said different color patches formed on said substrate;

(d) comparing each of the measured color values to a corresponding one of a plurality of reference color values, said reference color values representing a calibrated condition of said imaging system;

(e) calculating an error value representing a deviation of said measured color values from said reference color values; and

(f) adjusting one or more of said plurality of input color values to reduce said error value to a predetermined degree, wherein the adjustment of the input color values for one of said colorants is performed independently of the adjustment of the input color values for others of said colorants.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein said step (f) further includes the steps of:

(f1) accessing a color correction lookup table, wherein said color correction lookup table has a plurality of dimensions, each of said dimensions mapping at least a collection of said plurality of input color values to a plurality of corrected input color values for one of said different colorants, wherein said step (b) applies said one or more of said different colorants to said substrate based on said plurality of corrected input color values, and

(f2) adjusting said plurality of corrected input color values of said correction lookup table to reduce said error value to said predetermined degree.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of providing to a user of said imaging system a representation of said error value.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein said step (a) includes selecting said subset of said plurality of input color values such that in said step (b), one or more of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of at least three of said different colorants to said substrate.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein said plurality of different color patches consists of less than seven different color patches.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein said plurality of different color patches consists of less than eight different color patches.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein said plurality of different color patches consists of less than nineteen different color patches.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein said plurality of different color patches consists of less than twenty-three different color patches.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein said step (a) includes selecting said subset of said plurality of input color values such that step (b) comprises the steps of:

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of at least three of said different colorants to said substrate highlight-tone amounts,

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of at least three of said different colorants to said substrate in quarter-tone amounts, and

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of at least three of said different colorants to said substrate in mid-tone amounts.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein said step (a) further includes selecting said subset of said plurality of input color values such that step (b) comprises the step of:

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of at least three of said different colorants to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein said step (a) further includes selecting said subset of said plurality of input color values such that step (b) comprises the steps of:

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of a first and a second of said different colorants to said substrate in saturated-tone amounts,

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of a first and a third of said different colorants to said substrate in saturated-tone amounts, and

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of a second and a third of said different colorants to said substrate in saturated-tone amounts.

12. The method of claim 10, wherein said step (a) further includes selecting said subset of said plurality of input color values such that step (b) comprises the steps of:

forming each of a subset of said plurality of different color patches by application of a combination of a single one of said different colorants in a highlight-tone amount,

forming each of a second subset of said plurality of different color patches by application of a combination of a single one of said different colorants in a quarter-tone amount, and

forming each of a third subset of said plurality of different color patches by application of a combination of a single one of said different colorants in a mid-tone amount.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein said step (a) further includes selecting said subset of said plurality of input color values such that step (b) comprises the steps of:

forming each of a plurality of said different color patches by application of a combination of a single one of said different colorants in a three-quarter tone amount.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein said step (a) further includes selecting said subset of said plurality of input color values such that step (b) comprises the steps of:

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of a first and a second of said different colorants to said substrate in saturated-tone amounts,

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of a first and a third of said different colorants to said substrate in saturated-tone amounts, and

forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of a second and said third of said different colorants to said substrate in saturated-tone amounts.

15. The method of claim 1, wherein said imaging system comprises a thermal dye transfer printer, said substrate comprises a dye receptor, and said different colorants comprise cyan, magenta, and yellow dyes.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein said imaging system comprises an inkjet printer, said substrate comprises an ink receptor, and said different colorants comprise cyan, magenta, and yellow inks.

17. The method of claim 1, wherein said different colorants comprise cyan, magenta, yellow, and black colorants.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein said step (c) of measuring said color values includes measuring said color values in one of a plurality of system-independent color coordinate systems including L*a*b* and XYZ.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein said step (c) of measuring said color values includes measuring said color values in one of a plurality of system-dependent color coordinate systems including RGB and density CMY, and converting the measured color values into one of a plurality of system independent color coordinate systems including L*a*b* and XYZ.

20. An apparatus for recalibrating a multi-color imaging system, said imaging system being capable of applying a plurality of different colorants to a substrate based on a plurality of input color values, wherein each of said plurality of input color values controls an amount of one of said colorants to be applied to said substrate by said imaging system, the apparatus comprising:

(a) means for selecting a subset of said plurality of input color values;

(b) means for controlling said imaging system to apply one or more of said different colorants to said substrate based on said subset of said plurality of input color values, thereby forming a plurality of different color patches on said substrate, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is selected by said means (a) such that one or more of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of at least two of said different colorants to said substrate;

(c) means for measuring a plurality of color values for each of said color patches formed on said substrate;

(d) means for comparing each of the measured color values to a corresponding one of a plurality of reference color values, said reference color values representing measured color values for a calibrated condition of said imaging system;

(e) means for calculating an error value representing a deviation of said measured color values from said reference color values; and

(f) means for adjusting one or more of said plurality of input color values to reduce said error value to a predetermined degree, wherein the adjustment of the input color values for one of said colorants is performed independently of the adjustment of the input color values for others of said colorants.

21. The apparatus of claim 20, further comprising means for providing to a user of said imaging system a representation of said error value.

22. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said plurality of different color patches consists of less than seven different color patches.

23. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said plurality of different color patches consists of less than eight different color patches.

24. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said plurality of different color patches consists of less than nineteen different color patches.

25. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said plurality of different color patches consists of less than twenty-three different color patches.

26. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said different colorants comprise cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants.

27. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein said imaging system comprises a thermal dye transfer printer, said substrate comprises a dye receptor, and said different colorants comprise cyan, magenta, and yellow dyes.

28. A method for recalibrating a multi-color imaging system, said imaging system being capable of applying cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants to a substrate based on a plurality of input color values, wherein said input color values control amounts of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants to be applied to said substrate by said imaging system, the method comprising the steps of:

(a) selecting a subset of said plurality of input color values;

(b) controlling said imaging system to apply one or more of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants to said substrate based on said subset of said plurality of input color values, thereby forming a plurality of different color patches on said substrate, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is selected in said step (a) such that step (b) comprises the steps of;

(i) forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants in highlight-tone amounts,

(ii) forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants in quarter-tone amounts,

(iii) forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of said cyan, magenta and yellow colorants in mid-tone amounts,

(iv) forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of said cyan and magenta colorants in saturated-tone amounts,

(v) forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of said cyan and yellow colorants in saturated-tone amounts,

(vi) forming one of said different color patches by application of a combination of said magenta and yellow colorants in saturated-tone amounts,

(c) measuring a plurality of color values for each of said different color patches formed on said substrate;

(d) comparing each of the measured color values to a corresponding one of a plurality of reference color values, said reference color values representing measured color values for a calibrated condition of said imaging system;

(e) calculating an error value representing a deviation of said measured color values from said reference color values; and

(f) adjusting one or more of said plurality of input color values to reduce said error value to a predetermined degree, wherein the adjustment of the input color values for one said colorants is performed independently of the adjustment of the input color values for others of said colorants.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is further selected in said step (a) such that step (b) comprises the step of:

(vii) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of a combination of said cyan magenta, and yellow colorants to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is further selected in said step (a) such that step (b) comprises the step of:

(viii) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said cyan colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts,

(ix) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said magenta colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts, and

(x) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said yellow colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts.

31. The method of claim 30, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is further selected in said step (a) such that step (b) comprises the step of:

(xi) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said cyan colorant to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts,

(xii) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said magenta colorant to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts, and

(xiii) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said yellow colorant to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts.

32. The method of claim 28, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is further selected in said step (a) such that step (b) comprises the step of:

(vii) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said cyan colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts,

(viii) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said magenta colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts, and

(ix) forming a plurality of said different color patches by application of said yellow colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts.

33. An apparatus for recalibrating a multi-color imaging system, said imaging system being capable of applying cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants to a substrate based on a plurality of input color values, wherein said input color values control amounts of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants to be applied to said substrate by said imaging system, the apparatus comprising:

(a) means for selecting a subset of said plurality of input color values;

(b) means for controlling said imaging system to apply one or more of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants to said substrate based on said subset of said plurality of input color values, thereby forming a plurality of different color patches on said substrate, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is selected by said selecting means such that;

(i) one of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants in highlight-tone amounts,

(ii) one of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants in quarter-tone amounts,

(iii) one of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants in mid-tone amounts,

(iv) one of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of said cyan and magenta colorants in saturated-tone amounts,

(v) one of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of said cyan and yellow colorants in saturated-tone amounts,

(vi) one of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of said magenta and yellow colorants in saturated-tone amounts,

(c) means for measuring a plurality of color values for each of said different color patches formed on said substrate;

(d) means for comparing each of the measured color values to a corresponding one of a plurality of reference color values, said reference color values representing measured color values for a calibrated condition of said imaging system;

(e) means for calculating an error value representing a deviation of said measured color values from said reference color values; and

(f) means for adjusting one or more of said plurality of input color values to reduce said error value to a predetermined degree, wherein the adjustment of the input color values for one of said colorants is performed independently of the adjustment of the input color values for others of said colorants.

34. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is further selected by said selecting means such that in step (b):

(vii) one of said different color patches is formed by application of a combination of said cyan, magenta, and yellow colorants to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is further selected by said selecting means such that in step (b):

(viii) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said cyan colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts,

(ix) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said magenta colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts, and

(x) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said yellow colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts.

36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is further selected by said selecting means such that in step (b):

(xi) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said cyan colorant to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts,

(xii) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said magenta colorant to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts, and

(xiii) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said yellow colorant to said substrate in three-quarter tone amounts.

37. The apparatus of claim 33, wherein said subset of said plurality of input color values is further selected by said selecting means such that in step (b):

(vii) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said cyan colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts,

(viii) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said magenta colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts, and

(ix) a plurality of said different color patches are formed by application of said yellow colorant to said substrate in highlight-tone, quarter-tone, mid-tone, and saturated-tone amounts.
