1. A combination, comprising:
- a trocar having a working channel extending between a distal end and a proximal end, the trocar being adapted for disposition across a body wall;
a valve disposed in the working channel of the trocar;
an instrument sized and configured for insertion into the working channel of the trocar and through the valve, insertion of the instrument through the valve resulting in friction forces which inhibit movement of the instrument in the working channel of the trocar;
the valve including a first wall and a second wall intersecting the first wall, the first and second walls having a proximally facing surface with a combined area;
portions of the first wall and the second wall defining a contact surface in proximity to the intersection of the first wall and second wall, the contact surface having an area less than the combined area of the first wall and second wall and providing substantially the only contact between the instrument and the valve as the instrument is inserted into the working channel;
wherebythe reduced area of the contact surface significantly lowers the friction forces, thereby facilitating movement of the instrument through the working channel.

Abstract
A trocar having a working channel extending between a distal end and a proximal end is adapted for disposition across a body wall. A valve is disposed in the working channel so that an instrument inserted into the working channel extends through the valve resulting in undesirable friction forces. The valve is provided with a first wall which intersects a second wall to define a contact surface with an area less than the combined area of the first wall and second wall. This surface provides a substantially reduced contact with the instrument thereby reducing the friction forces and facilitating movement of the instrument through the working channel. An associated method includes the step of orienting the first wall and the second wall to provide the contact surface with the configuration of a line.

5. A method for actuating a valve in a trocar, the valve having an axis extending between a distal end and an opposing proximal end and having a normally closed state and an open state, the method comprising the steps of:
-
providing the valve with an outer wall defining a channel through the valve; providing the valve with at least a first inner wall, a second inner wall, and a third inner wall, each extending distally inwardly of the outer wall, the first and second inner walls intersecting to form an openable slit which is closed when the valve is in the normally closed state; orienting the second inner wall with respect to the third inner wall to form a line of intersection extending radially inwardly with progressive distal positions along the axis of the valve; inserting an elongate instrument distally into the channel of the valve to contact the line; and moving the instrument distally within the channel to open the slit. - View Dependent Claims (6)
