1. A communication network comprising:
- a private branch exchange;
a plurality of trunk lines; and
a plurality of radio units connected through said trunk lines to said private branch exchange, said radio units transmitting telephone messages to and receiving telephone messages from a communication cell, each of said radio units having a memory with a plurality of stored mobile identification numbers for which each of said radio units can respond to route an incoming call, each memory storing a different plurality of mobile identification numbers, each of said radio units further having circuitry actively responsive to a page to determine if said page includes a mobile identification number matching one of said stored mobile identification numbers and, if so, to instruct another radio unit to seize one of said trunk lines to route the incoming call to said private branch exchange.

Abstract
Radio units responsive to a paging signal seize a trunk to connect wireless calls to telephone apparatus serviced by a private branch exchange. The radio units can each respond to a different set of mobile identification numbers, or can be configured in a master-slave arrangement or can employ subaddressing. Wireless trunking to a wireless private branch exchange can also be accomplished and a system with multiple hierarchical layers can also be formed.

4. A radio unit for use in a communication network comprising:
-
a receiver for receiving a message from a communication cell; interface circuitry configured to seize a trunk line connecting said radio unit to a private branch exchange and to deliver said message to said private branch exchange; and a memory storing a list of identification numbers indicating destinations on said private branch exchange serviced by said radio unit to route an incoming call, said list of indication numbers differing from another list of indication numbers stored in a memory of another radio unit in said communication network; wherein said interface circuitry is responsive to a received paging signal to determine if said paging signal includes an identification number in said list and, if so, to instruct another said radio unit to seize said trunk to route said incoming call to said private branch exchange.

5. A communication network comprising:
-
a plurality of radio units, each of said radio units transmitting telephone messages to and receiving telephone messages from a communication cell, each of said radio units having a memory for storing a plurality of mobile identification numbers; a private branch exchange; and a plurality of trunk lines connecting each of said radio units to said private branch exchange; each of said radio units including circuitry actively responsive to a page to determine if said page includes a mobile identification number matching one of said stored mobile identification numbers and, if so, to instruct another of said radio units to seize one of said trunk lines to route an incoming call to said private branch exchange, and, if no said another of said radio units is available to seize one of said trunk lines, a master one of said radio units seizes one of said trunk lines to route said incoming call to said private branch exchange. - View Dependent Claims (6)
