A catheter guidewire adapted for use with an intravascular catheter such as an angioplasty catheter, the guidewire comprising a main portion and a distal portion, the main portion including a substantially circular cross-section and the distal portion including a wedge-shaped element, the wedge-shaped element having a height and width wherein one of the height or the width increases distally along at least a portion of the distal portion.
