1. A method for equilibrating a dissolved calibrant gas in an aqueous calibrant fluid, which is adapted to be used to calibrate a gas sensor within a housing, comprising:
- providing a housing containing an aqueous calibrant fluid adapted to contain at least one calibrant gas dissolved therein,providing a gas sensor within said housing, which is adapted to measure a concentration of dissolved gas in said aqueous calibrant fluid when said sensor is in direct contact with said aqueous calibrant fluid;
providing a gas phase, comprising at least one calibrant gas, in said housing and out of direct contact with said gas sensor;
forming an interface between said aqueous calibrant fluid and said gas phase positioned out of direct contact with said gas sensor, wherein said interface is substantially proximate to said gas sensor; and
equilibrating said aqueous calibrant fluid with said gas phase comprising said at least one calibrant gas;
whereby forming an equilibrated calibrant fluid containing said at least one calibrant gas dissolved therein.

Abstract
An apparatus and method of equilibrating the dissolved gas composition of an aqueous fluid to reflect the predetermined gas composition contained in a gas equilibration reservoir. The equilibrated aqueous fluid can be used in a method of determining the concentration of a dissolved gas in a fluid sample. In one embodiment, the method is used to control the equilibrated gas composition of a calibrant fluid which, in turn, is used to measure the concentration of a dissolved gas, such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, in a sample fluid, such as whole blood.

11. A method of calibrating a gas sensor, which is disposed within a housing, said method comprising;
-
disposing a gas sensor within said housing; disposing a gas phase of predetermined composition in said housing; disposing an aqueous calibrant fluid in said housing positioned so as to entirely cover said gas sensor; forming an interface between said gas phase and said calibrant fluid; positioning said interface proximate to but out of contact with said gas sensor; equilibrating said gas phase with said calibrant fluid under such conditions as to form an equilibrated gas composition in at least a portion of said calibrant fluid proximate to said gas sensor; and calibrating said gas sensor with said equilibrated gas composition of said calibrant fluid.
